He wished to offer the French who settled in Calatayud after helping him in the Battle of Cutanda (1120) against the Almoravids a place to pray. The current church was built two centuries later.

Salt water is deposited in the ponds from the surrounding mountains, and the water evaporates. After approximately a month, the level of salt reaches 10 centimetres (3.9 in) and is removed in sacks.
