The long central nave is profusely decorated with gold leaf, gilded plaster, and wood carvings, making it the most ornate church in Quito. The salt has been obtained in Maras since the time of the Inca Empire, and the site currently has around 3000 ponds of 5 square metres (54 sq ft) each. Salt water is deposited in the ponds from the surrounding mountains, and the water evaporates. After approximately a month, the level of salt reaches 10 centimetres (3.9 in) and is removed in sacks.
