Help with SVG

edit

Hi, i saw your work for english wikipedia about axial seamount (tectonic map of USA west coast). Should you explain me how to fix canvas in SVG format, as you done in your work? I have a similar problem with a map. Thanks. --Ciaurlec (talk) 11:59, 29 December 2010 (UTC) PS i apologize for editing in your page.Reply

Hi Ciaurlec - this may not be what you wanted, as the Axial Seamount map is completely drew from scratch. Briefly: I setup 3 separate layers in Illustrator. On the bottom I pulled a blank Americas map from the Commons, overlaid the original Seamount map in the correct position on the middle layer (make 50% transparent and locked), and traced (with pen-tool) and annotated on the top layer. I then used the "live paint" function in Illustrator to add the colors to the partitions. The reason I pulled in the Americas map is that I was sure that the original map was not oriented top-to-True-North, and I wish the final map to portray North correctly as per cartographic conventions.

Here I am. I ll try to translate the words...

  • energy level diagram = Diagramma livello energia
  • spectra = spettro
  • photons = fotoni
  • transmittion spectra = spettro di trasmissione
  • absorption " = spettro d'assorbimento
  • beam source=fascio sorgente
  • incident radiation = radiazione incidente
  • transmitted " = " trasmessa
  • Emission = emissione
  • absorption = assorbimento
    • sample/analyte = campione / ?
  • Transmission = trasmissione
  • detection = rivelazione

Svg Map

edit

Hi there. Thanks for effort in fixing problematic map. I have a few questions. About blue circles, where they came from? I don't understand, what was the problem, because I didn't draw any circles. And for future maps - Have you any tip for me - Which font to use and other important things, that will make no problems in later maps? Thanks a lot, again... Best regards.--Ivan25 (talk) 23:04, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Oh, yes, I forgot. I will download your fixed map and do some changes to make it more like my original. After that I'll try again with upload. We'll see what will happen :)--Ivan25 (talk) 23:09, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ivan, pleasure to help. I have no idea where the artifacts come from - the blue circles show up in all versions of the SVG I see in my browser (thumbnails, PNG rendered, supposingly original SVG), but they do not appear when it's opened in Illustrator. I also really did nothing but re-saving it. Maybe you should report the oddity to the Village Pump, and they may have better idea? Jon C (talk) 23:57, 14 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Electrical safety illustrations/stale

edit

I see now that the request for vector versions of 'Electrical safety illustrations' on the Workshop page has been marked as stale, I am almost finished with four svg's that are redraws of these images. Should I can my work or are they still interesting? BTW what is the proper procedure to change a template when I have drawn an svg of a pixel image and uploaded that svg too wikicommons through http://toolserver.org/~luxo/derivativeFX/deri1.php ? (or is the derivative upload not the propper way to do that even if the original work was a wikicommons png, jpg, gif ...? Gregors Gregors (talk) 14:43, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sweetness and light :) I'll go back to change the tag to non-stale - I marked them as stale because no one seemed to show an interest/ability in it.
In general, if it is a perfect replicate (and the task is only trivial tracing), I select "Derivative Work". If it's a non-trivial tracing task (e.g., vectorizing some complex public domain coat of arms), or involve substantial original work, I submit them as "my own work". Hope that helps. Jon C (talk) 20:01, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
PS, just noticed that you've uploaded an entry for 23rd World Scout Jamboree. It's usually useful to add a note to the graphist opinion section saying that things are completed, and you can add a   Done tag to indicate that too. Tremendous satisfaction follows ;)
I'm really glad that someone has responded to my query. But i need even more help: Where do I find the "graphist opinon" section (do I create it myself?, is it a template that I copy paste into the image edit page somewhere?) and how and where do I add that pretty green   Done checkmark? Gregors (talk) 20:34, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Gregors: Usually the request will consist of a (source) images gallery, a request, and a graphist opinion section (you'll see this in the Electrical Illustration section). When you're interested in taking a request, you should (1) 'edit' the section, using the tag   Request taken by Gregors so other graphists won't be simultaneously replicating your efforts. When you're done the graphic, you'd (2) upload it to Commons (as previously discussed), and then go back to the entry to (3) add a comment that the request is   Done (and where it can be found). The original requester may want modifications on what was submitted, and after some back and forth and everyone is happy, she should tag the section as
  Resolved
.
Sometimes the requester don't use the template, in which case you'd create a sub-heading for graphist opinion. Jon C (talk) 21:06, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Text for Spectography overview.svg detector

edit

For the 'Detector' the pop.up text reads: "Historically a detector is an optical device where the beam is splitted (by a diffraction grating ..." I'm not a spectrography expert but I suspect that "...split..." is better than "...splitted..." Please correct me if I am mistaken! Gregors (talk)

I think you're correct. Grammar isn't my strongest suit.
On that note - this is something that you can correct. Most editors and graphists are happy to have their work modified for the better by others. Jon C (talk) 20:14, 13 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Changes to map of New France

edit

Hi. I noticed you made changes to File:Nouvelle-France map-en.svg back in January. In making them, you apparently messed up the rendering of the "territories ceded under the treaty of Utrecht". In visually comparing your version to the previous one, it should be clear which territories should have the graded color. (I furthermore note that the previous map is actually slightly in error, since peninsular Nova Scotia was also ceded at Utrecht, and was not in graded color in the earlier version.) My Inkscape skills are particularly weak with respect to getting these color gradations consistent -- can you look at this? Thanks! Magic♪piano 20:57, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi MagicPiano. Thanks for pointing this out - I did mess up the gradient. I fiddled quite abit with it since your post and couldn't fix it; this seems to be related to how Illustrator handles SVG gradients (I wish we could use PDF on mediaWiki!) As a stop-gap measure I replaced the gradient with a purple bloc - we could revert to the previous version if you think that works better. Jon C (talk) 20:39, 13 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think the purple is a decent alternative. Thanks for looking into this. Magic♪piano 20:48, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Re: Changes to map of New France

Try a "Pattern" instead of a gradient... Gregors

Hi Gregors - patterns from Illustrator don't work with SVG render in MediaWiki; it's simply not rendered. I like to use patterns to add textures to illustrations, and tried quite hard at some point to get it working. Rasterizing does the job, but it's no longer a vector piece... OTOH symbols do work, but they tend to bloat up the file. Jon C (talk) 18:27, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've been looking at your picture of wheat kernel nutrition values (Wheat-kernel nutrition.png). Something seems to be wrong with the composition of bran: there is at least 63 g + 16 g + 3 g + 43 g = 125 g of nutrients per 100 g of bran (in the picture). Hello, Jkwchui!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Jkwchui! I nominated your diagram at QI, and it passed - congratulations! :-) During the nom, though, someone wondered why its semitransparent, and I've noticed that there's an extra step in the green dome of the High pressure fuel turbopump which I don't think should be there, as the line coming off it would block off the fuel flow - was wondering if you could take a few moments to fix it? Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Former COA Republika Srpska.svg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

The reason given by the user who added this tag is: This file is tagged as PD as per Serbian Copyright Law (PD-SerbiaGov), but this is coat of arms of w:Republika Srpska (part of Bosnia and Herzegovina), not of Serbia. So, Serbian Copyright Law has nothing to do with this file.

SVG fonts in laryngeal nerve

edit

File:Lyryngeal recurrent nerve.svg

First, I requested a name change for the typo. Just wanted to let you know. Also, AI doesn't ever set SVG fonts correctly. It's why they look out of place usually once rendered on the server. It's in fact because it's not rendering the correct font (because it can't find it). This is all stuff I just realized rather recently, so maybe you already know it. I apologize if you do.

For instance, in the file in question, AI's incorrect output:

font-family="'LiberationSans-Bold'"

which should actually be:

font-family="Liberation Sans" font-weight="bold"

Note the bold as a separate parameter and in lower case.

If you ever need italics:

font-family="Liberation Sans" font-style="italic"

Note that this again uses lower case, but style instead of weight.

As the file you created didn't quite look right with bold lettering (once fixed) I just set it to regular Liberation Sans. One other thing you might want to think about to increase the versatility and usability of your fantastic SVG files is setting a generic/fallback font. You can set as many as you want, separated by commas. For your file I did this:

font-family="Liberation Sans, sans-serif"

As you can imagine, it sets the fallback font as the system's generic sans-serif font. You could even go all out, like in the good old days of the HTML font tag, and do this:

font-family="Liberation Sans, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif

Anyway, just some info if you didn't know it. If you already did, great, and I edited your upload. Have a good night (or day)! The Haz talk 06:08, 2 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
