Nel 1980 Cassiopeia A aveva una densit\u00E0 di flusso di 2720\u00B150 Jy alla frequenza di 1 GHz, ma da allora questo valore \u00E8 declinato al ritmo di 0,97\u00B10,04 % all'anno. Nonostante sia molto brillante nelle onde radio, questo resto di supernova \u00E8 estremamente debole nel visibile, tanto che appare solo nelle fotografie a lunga esposizione. La radiosorgente, identificata nel 1947, \u00E8 stata una delle prime radiosorgenti discrete ad essere individuata; la controparte ottica \u00E8 stata invece scoperta nel 1950. La supernova che ha originato Cas A \u00E8 esplosa circa 11000 anni fa. Il materiale in espansione appare coprire dalla prospettiva della Terra circa 10 anni luce. Si pensa che la luce dell'esplosione abbia raggiunto la Terra approssimativamente 300 anni fa, ma non ci sono notizie storiche di un avvistamento di supernova risalenti a quel periodo, probabilmente perch\u00E9 la polvere interstellare ha assorbito buona parte della radiazione visibile prima che raggiungesse la Terra.
