Aetna Inc.'s 2011 African American History Calendar features professor Willis as one of thirteen distinguished leaders of faith-based health initiatives in the United States. Willis grew up in Docena, Alabama (near Birmingham), as the daughter of a Baptist deacon and steelworker. While traveling through Asia during the early 1970s, she became the student of Tibetan lama Thubten Yeshe, who encouraged her academic pursuits. She received BA and MA degrees in philosophy from Cornell University (thesis: History, Faith, and Kerygma; A Critique of Bultmann's Existentialist Theology.), and a Ph.D. in Indic and Buddhist Studies from Columbia University (dissertation: A Study of the Chapter on Reality Based Upon the Tattvartha-patalam of Asanga's Bodhisattvabhumi.). Since 2006, she has contributed to the group blog On Faith (sponsored by Newsweek and the Washington Post) alongside Elie Wiesel, Desmond Tutu, and Madeleine Albright, among others. In 2003, she was awarded Wesleyan University's Binswanger Prize for Excellence in Teaching."@en , "جان ويليس (بالإنجليزية: Jan Willis)‏ هي فيلسوفة أمريكية، ولدت في 1948."@ar ; dbo:wikiPageWikiLink , dbc:Columbia_University_alumni , dbc:African-American_philosophers , , dbr:Baptist_Church , dbc:Living_people , dbc:African-American_writers , dbr:Lama_Yeshe , dbr:Wesleyan_University , dbc:Converts_to_Buddhism , dbc:American_Buddhists , dbr:Aetna , , dbc:Tibetan_Buddhism_writers , , dbr:Madeleine_Albright , , dbr:Tibetan_Buddhism , dbc:Cornell_University_alumni , dbc:American_women_non-fiction_writers , dbr:Thubten_Yeshe , , dbc:Foundation_for_the_Preservation_of_the_Mahayana_Tradition , , dbr:Time_Magazine , , dbc:Gelug_Buddhists , , dbc:Religious_philosophers , dbr:Desmond_Tutu , , dbc:Tibetan_Buddhists_from_the_United_States , dbr:Cornell_University , dbr:Ebony_Magazine , dbr:Newsweek , dbr:Washington_Post , dbr:Elie_Wiesel , dbr:Jeffrey_Paine , dbc:American_scholars_of_Buddhism , dbc:African-American_women_writers , dbc:Wesleyan_University_faculty , , dbr:Columbia_University , dbr:Americans , dbc:American_women_philosophers . @prefix dbp: . dbr:Jan_Willis dbp:website . @prefix dbt: . dbr:Jan_Willis dbp:wikiPageUsesTemplate dbt:Modern_Buddhist_writers , dbt:Buddhism_topics , dbt:Reflist , dbt:Authority_control , dbt:Short_description , dbt:Infobox_person , dbt:ISBN ; dbo:wikiPageRevisionID 1086419218 ; dbo:wikiPageExternalLink , , . @prefix xsd: . dbr:Jan_Willis dbo:wikiPageLength "7485"^^xsd:nonNegativeInteger ; dbo:wikiPageID 16256423 ; dbp:name "Janice Dean Willis"@en ; owl:sameAs , . @prefix ns16: . dbr:Jan_Willis owl:sameAs ns16:p088196690 , , wikidata:Q6150210 . @prefix yago-res: . dbr:Jan_Willis owl:sameAs yago-res:Jan_Willis , dbr:Jan_Willis , , . @prefix gold: . dbr:Jan_Willis gold:hypernym dbr:Professor ; schema:sameAs . @prefix prov: . dbr:Jan_Willis prov:wasDerivedFrom ; foaf:isPrimaryTopicOf wikipedia-en:Jan_Willis ; dbp:birthDate 1948 ; dbo:occupation dbr:Jan_Willis__PersonFunction__1 ; dbp:almaMater "BA and MA degrees in philosophy, Cornell University; Ph.D. in Indic and Buddhist Studies, Columbia University"@en ; dbp:occupation "Professor of Religion"@en ; dbo:birthYear "1948"^^xsd:gYear ; dbp:awards "Wesleyan University's Binswanger Prize for Excellence in Teaching, 2003"@en ; dbo:stateOfOrigin dbr:Americans ; dbo:nationality dbr:Americans ; dbo:employer dbr:Wesleyan_University ; dbp:nationality dbr:Americans ; dbp:knownFor "Author of books on Tibetan Buddhism"@en ; dbp:employer dbr:Wesleyan_University ; dbo:knownFor dbr:Tibetan_Buddhism . dbr:Dakini dbo:wikiPageWikiLink dbr:Jan_Willis . dbr:Tibet_House_US dbo:wikiPageWikiLink dbr:Jan_Willis . dbr:List_of_Columbia_University_alumni_and_attendees dbo:wikiPageWikiLink dbr:Jan_Willis . dbr:List_of_philosophers_born_in_the_20th_century dbo:wikiPageWikiLink dbr:Jan_Willis .
