- La 61a Mostra Internacional de Cinema de Venècia es va celebrar entre l'1 i l'11 de setembre de 2004. El festival fou inaugurat amb la pel·lícula de Steven Spielberg The Terminal, i fou clausurada amb la de Katsuhiro Otomo Steamboy. El Lleó d'Or fou atorgat a Vera Drake, dirigida oer Mike Leigh. En aquesta edició del festival es va iniciar una nova secció independent, Giornate degli autori, "per al cinema lliure, nous talents i noves històries". Aquesta secció està organitzada per l'ANAC (Associació Nacional d'Autors Cinematogràfics) i l'API (Autors i Productors Independents). També en aquesta edició es va llançar Història Secreta del Cinema Italià una nova secció de la selecció oficial, amb l'objectiu de restaurar i redescobrir sistemàticament obres del cinema italià que han estat "oblidades, invisibles, desconegudes o mal enteses". La retrospectiva es va dur a terme durant quatre anys, que es va estendre per una retrospectiva de dos anys anomenada Aquests fantasmes: Cinema italià redescobert, seguida d'una edició de la retrospectiva de la comèdia italiana. - The 61st annual Venice International Film Festival was held between 1 and 11 September 2004. The festival opened with Steven Spielberg's The Terminal, and closed with Katsuhiro Otomo's Steamboy. The Golden Lion was awarded to the film Vera Drake, directed by Mike Leigh. On this edition of the festival, a new independent section, Venice Days (Giornate degli autori), has started "for free cinema, new talents and new stories". This section is organized by the ANAC (National Association of Cinematographic Authors) and the API (Independent Authors & Producers). Also in this edition, The Secret History of Italian Cinema was launched, a new section of the official selection, with the aim of restoring and systematically rediscovering sides of the Italian cinema that have been "forgotten, invisible, unknown or misunderstood". The retrospective was planned for four years, which was extended by a two-year retrospective called These Phantoms: Italian Cinema Rediscovered, followed by one edition of Italian Comedy Retrospective. La ceremonia se abrió con la película de Steven Spielberg, y se cerró con el trabajo de Katsuhiro Otomo Steamboy. El León de Oro fue otorgada a Vera Drake, dirigida por Mike Leigh. En esta edición del festival, se creó la Venice Days (Giornate degli autori), una nueva sección independiente con la intención de promocionar "el cine libre, nuevos talentos y nuevas historias". Esta sección está organizada por ANAC (Asociación Nacional de Autores cinematográficos de Italia) y la API (Autores y productores independientes). También en esta edición, se presentó La Historia secreta del cine italiano, con la intención de restaurar y redescubrir piezas del cine italiano que hayan sido "olvidadas, invisibles, desconocidas o minusvaloradas". - 61. Międzynarodowy Festiwal Filmowy w Wenecji odbył się w dniach 1−11 września 2004 roku. Imprezę otworzył pokaz amerykańskiego filmu Terminal w reżyserii Stevena Spielberga. W konkursie głównym zaprezentowano 22 filmy pochodzące z 13 różnych krajów. Jury pod przewodnictwem brytyjskiego reżysera Johna Boormana przyznało nagrodę główną festiwalu, Złotego Lwa, brytyjskiemu filmowi Vera Drake w reżyserii Mike'a Leigh. Drugą nagrodę w konkursie głównym, Grand Prix Jury, przyznano hiszpańskiemu filmowi W stronę morza w reżyserii Alejandra Amenábara. Honorowego Złotego Lwa za całokształt twórczości odebrali amerykański reżyser Stanley Donen i nestor portugalskiego kina Manoel de Oliveira. Galę otwarcia i zamknięcia festiwalu prowadziła włoska aktorka Claudia Gerini. (pl)
