- Culdocentesis is a medical procedure involving the extraction of fluid from the pouch of Douglas (a rectouterine pouch posterior to the vagina) through a needle. It can be one diagnostic technique used in identifying pelvic inflammatory disease (in which case purulent fluid will be extracted) and ruptured ectopic pregnancies that cause hemoperitoneum. In the procedure, the rectouterine pouch is often reached through the posterior fornix of the vagina. The process of creating the hole is called colpotomy if a scalpel incision is made to drain the fluid rather than using a needle. (en)
- Culdocentese is een onderzoekstechniek waarbij bij de (vrouwelijke) patiënt een naald door het achterste vaginagewelf wordt gestoken om wat vocht uit de Holte van Douglas (een blind eindigende ruimte tussen de vagina en de endeldarm) af te nemen, doorgaans om meer informatie te verkrijgen over een ziekteproces in de buikholte. Het onderzoek wordt meestal toegepast om bloedingen te lokaliseren wanneer een extra-uteriene (buitenbaarmoederlijke) zwangerschap wordt vermoed. - Culdocentese é um procedimento médico no qual é extraído, com auxílio de uma agulha, fluido da escavação retouterina (saco de Douglas) posterior à vagina. Se o fluido extraído é sanguinolento pode ser utilizado para diagnosticar hemorragia abdominal, por exemplo por uma gravidez ectópica, por trauma ou por um tumor sangrante. Se o fluido extraído é purulento pode indicar uma infecção como doença inflamatória pélvica ou Peritonite bacteriana espontânea. Se o líquido da escavação retouterina é extraído com um bisturi o procedimento é chamado de colpotomia. Visualizar esse espaço com um endoscópio é chamado de culdoscopia. (pt)
