- The Enforcement Acts were three bills that were passed by the United States Congress between 1870 and 1871. They were criminal codes that protected African Americans’ right to vote, to hold office, to serve on juries, and receive equal protection of laws. Passed under the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, the laws also allowed the federal government to intervene when states did not act to protect these rights. The acts passed following the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, which gave full citizenship to anyone born in the United States or freed slaves, and the Fifteenth Amendment, which banned racial discrimination in voting. At the time, the lives of all newly freed slaves, as well as their political and economic rights, were being threatened. This threat led to the creation of the Enforcement Acts. (en)
- Les Enforcement Acts sont une série de trois lois adoptées par le Congrès des États-Unis entre 1870 et 1871 pour protéger les droits constitutionnels des Afro-Américains menacés par les actes terroristes du Ku Klux Klan dans les États du Sud. Ces trois lois sont : 1.
* La loi du 31 mai 1870 qui interdit toute forme de violation du droit de vote, que toute violation serait un crime fédéral. 2.
* La loi du 28 février 1871 qui prévoyait un contrôle fédéral de l'inscription des électeurs sur les listes électorales et des élections afin d'éviter les fraudes dans les urnes et de sanctionner les intimidations verbales ou physiques envers les électeurs afro-américains noirs. 3.
* La loi du 20 avril 1871, communément appelée le Ku Klux Klan Act qui criminalise la résistance violente à l'autorité fédérale, afin de protéger les fonctionnaires civils et militaires qui appliquent les mesures de la Reconstruction. (fr)
