Zu den Zielen des Fachverbands gehört die Unterstützung von Forschung, Lehre und Anwendungen der mathematischen Wissenschaft; der Verband will außerdem Mathematik einer breiten Öffentlichkeit nahe bringen. Die DMV bemüht sich auch um den internationalen Austausch von Mathematikern und vertritt die deutschen Mathematiker in der European Mathematical Society (EMS) und der International Mathematical Union (IMU).
