- The Kissing Case is the arrest, conviction and lengthy sentencing of two prepubescent African-American boys in 1958 in Monroe, North Carolina. A white girl kissed each of them on the cheek and later told her mother, who accused the boys of rape. The boys were then charged by authorities with molestation. Civil rights activists became involved in representing the boys. The boys were arrested in October 1958, separated from their parents for a week, beaten and threatened by investigators, then sentenced by a Juvenile Court judge. Leaders and members of the local NAACP, including Robert F Williams, Eleanor Roosevelt, President Eisenhower, and other civil rights organizations, such as the New York-based The Committee to Combat Racial Injustice (CCRI), protested the charges, trial and sentencing. The United States was embarrassed by protests from other governments, demonstrations in major cities, and strong criticism in the international press. North Carolina Governor Luther H. Hodges finally granted clemency to the boys, releasing them from the reformatory in early 1959 after they had been there for three months. Neither he nor authorities in Monroe ever officially apologized to the boys or their families. (en)
- Le Kissing Case est une affaire judiciaire américaine débutant en octobre 1958 et concernant l’arrestation et la condamnation à une longue peine de deux garçons afro-américains à Monroe (Caroline du Nord). Les deux garçons James « Hanover » Thompson et David « Fuzzy » Simpson, tous les deux âgés d'au plus 10 ans au moment des faits, ont été accusés de viol après qu'une petite fille blanche prénommée Sissy (âgée de 6 ou 8 ans, selon les sources) les a embrassés sur la joue dans la cour de récréation de leur école alors qu'ils jouaient aux Indiens et au cow-boys. Ils sont arrêtés, battus et menacés par les enquêteurs, empêchés pendant plusieurs jours de voir leurs parents ou de rencontrer les avocats dépêchés par les associations pour les droits civiques. Les procureurs demandent qu'ils soient placés en maison de correction jusqu'à leur 21 ans peine à laquelle ils sont effectivement condamnés dans un procès sans avocat ni débat contradictoire pour agression sexuelle et attentat à la pudeur. Il 28 ottobre 1958 a Monroe, in Carolina del Nord, due ragazzi di colore, il bambino di sette anni David "Fuzzy" Simpson ed James Hanover Thompson, di 9 anni, furono arrestati per aver baciato su una guancia una ragazza bianca, Sissy Sutton, mentre giocava con loro nel quartiere. Furono accusati di molestie sessuali e condannati ad un riformatorio fino all'età di 21 anni. In un'intervista del 2011, Simpson e Thompson hanno dichiarato che fu la ragazza a dare a James un bacio.
