- El Rijksmuseum Twenthe a Enschede, Països Baixos, va ser fundat el 1927 pel baró de la indústria tèxtil Jan Bernard van Heek. Va donar la seva pròpia col·lecció privada i l'edifici del museu al govern, convertint-lo així en un museu nacional. El museu està situat al barri de Roombeek, a 10 minuts a peu al nord-est de l'estació de ferrocarril. Té una petita botiga de regals i una cafeteria, però no disposa d'aparcament, de manera que es recomana als visitants que no vinguin amb cotxe. Al llarg de les dècades, el museu s’ha centrat tant en l’art del segle xviii com en les obres contemporànies, amb la col·lecció Art & Project, una antiga galeria d’art propietat de Geert van Beijeren i Adriaan van Ravesteijn, a més d’una gran col·lecció d’animals pintats per Wilhelm Kuhnert, Carl Rungius i Bruno Liljefors. El museu també té una gran col·lecció d’obres del segle XVII ( i Salomon van Ruysdael) i del segle XVIII, llibres medievals i objectes religiosos i algunes pintures d’ impressionistes de finals del segle XIX. La col·lecció d'art del segle XX també és important (Karel Appel, Armando). Una ala del museu s'utilitza per a exposicions temporals d'art majoritàriament modern. És el museu d'art més gran de l'est del país. El 1996, el museu es va convertir en una organització privada en forma de fundació. El 2000, un desastre degut a focs artificials o vuurwerkramp va causar grans danys a l'edifici, però la col·lecció d'art va resultar completament il·lesa. - The Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, the Netherlands, was founded in 1927 by textile industry Baron Jan Bernard Van Heek. He donated his own private collection and the museum building to the government, thus making it a national museum.The museum is situated in the quarter of Roombeek, 10 minutes on foot north-east from the railway station. It has a small gift shop and a cafe, but only poor car parking facilities, so visitors are advised not to come by car. Throughout the decades, the museum has become focused on 18th-century art as well as contemporary works, with the collection of Art & Project, a former art gallery owned by Geert van Beijeren and Adriaan van Ravesteijn, as well as a large collection of animal paintings by Wilhelm Kuhnert, Carl Rungius and Bruno Liljefors. The museum also owns a large collection of 17th century (Jacob van Ruisdael and Salomon van Ruysdael) and 18th century works, medieval books and religious objects, and some paintings of late 19th century Impressionists. The collection of 20th-century art is also important (Karel Appel, Armando). One wing of the museum is used for temporary exhibitions of mostly modern art. It is the largest art museum in the east of the country. In 1996, the museum became a private organisation in the form of a foundation. In 2000, the fireworks disaster or vuurwerkramp did extensive damage to the building, but the collection of art was completely unharmed. The museum closed for nearly a year to do repairs. From 2006 to 2008 the museum showed parts of the collection of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, especially art from the 18th century. (en)

Tegenwoordig kent het museum wisselende tentoonstellingen en heeft het een grote collectie oude, moderne en hedendaagse kunst. Het museum ligt aan de rand van de wijk Roombeek. Rijksmuseum Twenthe vormt samen met TETEM en De Museumfabriek het cluster Roombeek Cultuurpark. Jaarlijks ontvangt Rijksmuseum Twenthe veel bezoekers uit binnen- en buitenland. Sinds 2012 is Arnoud Odding directeur van Rijksmuseum Twenthe. Hij volgde Lisette Pelsers op, die vertrok om directeur te worden van het Kröller-Müller Museum in het Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe te Otterlo. Arnoud Odding heeft met zijn aantreden een nieuwe missie en visie voor het museum opgesteld. Het museum noemt zichzelf sinds 2012 het Museum van de Verbeelding: "Rijksmuseum Twenthe bestudeert, presenteert en stimuleert de menselijke verbeelding. Want het is de verbeelding waarmee we vorm en betekenis geven aan onze wereld" (quote uit: Missie RMT). Vanuit deze missie programmeert Rijksmuseum Twenthe gemiddeld zeven tentoonstellingen per jaar.
