Some formulations of sub-grid processes such as diffusion parameterization schemes in computational geophysical fluid dynamics that can be improved based on full-irreversibility are also discussed, although they have not yet been systematically subjected to scrutiny from the perspective of the entropy budgets. A comparative investigation shows that the principle of MEP applies to the entropy production of macroscopic fluxes and determines the most probable state, that is, a system may choose a development meta-stable trajectory with a smaller production since entropy production behavior involves many specific dynamical and thermodynamic processes in the atmosphere and the extremal principles only provide a general insight into the overall configuration of the atmosphere. In contrast to the principle of MEP, the analysis of NEF is able to provide a new insight into the mechanism responsible for the evolution of a weather system as well as a new approach to predicting its track and intensity trend.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/e13010211","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,1,19]],"date-time":"2011-01-19T17:16:40Z","timestamp":1295457400000},"page":"211-240","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":31,"title":["Understanding Atmospheric Behaviour in Terms of Entropy: A Review of Applications of the Second Law of Thermodynamics to Meteorology"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"13","author":[{"given":"Ying","family":"Liu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China"}]},{"given":"Chongjian","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China"}]},{"given":"Donghai","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,1,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"6694","DOI":"10.1088\/0022-3727\/40\/21\/032","article-title":"Linking entropy flow with typhoon evolution: a case-study","volume":"40","author":"Liu","year":"2007","journal-title":"J.
