Cerdic of Wessex

Cerdic (died 534) was the leader of the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain who became the founder and first king of Wessex, reigning from 519 to 534.

Biography

Conquering the Gewisse

Cerdic and his son Cynric landed in what would later become Hampshire in 495.[1] There he fought with a Brittonic king Natanleod, and killed him in 508. In 519, Cerdic undertook the throne and founded the House of Wessex. After his death in 534, his son Cynric succeeded him as king.[2]

Legacy

During the 870s, the history of the early foundation of the Kingdom of Wessex was often studied in seminaries in the city of Wincestre. In one such seminary, an account of Cerdic exploits against the Gewisse was found and read by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir while she was in the city.[2]
