Sabu

Sabu (died c. 56 BCE) was a Medjay protector of Siwa. Born during the reign of pharaoh Ptolemy XII Auletes, he was secretly one of the last in the bloodline of the Medjay, elite warriors who were sworn to protect Egypt and its traditions. With his wife, Ahmose, he was the father of the Hidden One Bayek.

Biography

Sometime before 85 BCE, Sabu met and married Ahmose, who would go on to give birth to their son, Bayek. They made their home in Siwa,[1] where Sabu took to raising cattle, though he lost half his herd one year when they ate peaches and were poisoned by cyanide in the fruit pits.[2] When Bayek was still a boy, their home was attacked by a group of bandits led by the grave robber Menna. Sabu and Ahmose fought them off, with Sabu killing most of them, though Menna escaped.[1]

One day, a messenger arrived to relay a message to Sabu alerting him that a man by the name of Bion was hunting the Medjay to extinction. After speaking with Rabiah, a family friend and counsel, Sabu elected to leave Siwa without giving a reason other than it being safer for Siwa that he did so. Unbeknownst to Sabu, his son Bayek eventually left Siwa in search of him.[1]

Sabu met with Hemon, the Elder of the Medjay, in Djerty. He informed the elder that Emsaf, a fellow Medjay, had been killed. Sabu left in search of the killer and eventually caught up with his son, Aya, Kensa, and Tuta on the island of Elephantine after their group had followed a false lead about Sabu's whereabouts. Over the next few years, Sabu trained his son as a Medjay, lessons that were in turn passed onto Aya with Sabu's approval. They spent years training on the run across many villages.[1] During this time, Sabu told Bayek that the stone circles across the country and their associated constellations of the Egyptian gods showed humanity's place in the world.[3]

Around 56 BCE, Aya was set upon by horse thieves at a watering hole while traveling back to Siwa. She held her own but was saved by Bion, the former soldier still intent on eradicating the Medjay. When Aya unknowingly led Bion right to the camp where Bayek and Sabu were training, he let loose multiple arrows that hit Sabu and used his blade to slice Bayek’s stomach. Sabu managed to push Bayek to safety into a nearby river before succumbing to his wounds.[1]

Legacy

With Sabu's death, Bayek became the last living Medjay.[1] Over a decade later, Bayek began instructing his own son Khemu in the ways of the Medjay and told him what Sabu had said years ago about stone circles, sparking the boy's desire to visit every one of them.[3]
