This page lists answers to the most commonly asked questions about Brill's rights and permissions policy.
- I am a Brill author and I (and/or my new publishing house) would like to re-use or translate my Brill article or chapter in a new book. Am I allowed to do that?
- I would like to use an illustration from a Brill publication. Am I allowed to do so?

I am a Brill author and I (and/or my new publishing house) would like to re-use or translate my Brill article or chapter in a new book. Am I allowed to do that?
- If the new work is a monograph authored by you or an edited volume edited by you, you may reproduce your article or chapter (or a translation of it), on the condition of an acknowledgement of the original Brill publication. The Brill material may not add up to more than 40% of the total number of pages of the new monograph. A free permission includes print and E-Book versions. There is no need to notify Brill’s Rights Department. No permission forms will be signed for free permissions. There is, however, one restriction: should the new publication be published with an Open Access license, a fee will be charged by Brill for the Open Access license. If your new publication will be published with an Open Access/Creative Commons license, please contact our Open Access Department for further details.
- If the new work is an edited volume, not edited by you, a fee will be charged. In these cases permission requests for the reproduction of (parts of) Brill chapters and articles should be cleared via the Copyright Clearance Centre (CCC). Just go to the CCC Marketplace and search for the book or journal article that you want to re-use material from. Fill out the required information and follow the prompts to acquire the proper permission.
I would like to use an illustration from a Brill publication. Am I allowed to do so?
First you will need to establish the copyright ownership of the illustration by checking the caption and illustration list. If the caption doesn’t indicate otherwise, you may assume that Brill owns the copyright and you may contact our rights department with a permission request. In your request, please be as specific as possible and add the title of the work, article, page number and caption of the illustration. Please be advised that a fee may be charged for the use. A response may take up to 4-6 weeks.
I would like to store my monograph/article/chapter in a repository or upload it on a website. Am I allowed to do that?
We call this self-archiving and our detailed self-archiving policy is to be found here. Please be advised that Brill doesn’t allow complete and published monographs to be uploaded anywhere.
I am a Brill author and was contacted by a foreign publishing house, that expressed an in interest in translating my Brill book, chapter or article. How should I handle this request?
- If this regards a chapter or article and it is to be published in an edited volume/journal, a fee will be charged. Kindly inform the publishing house that permission requests for the reproduction of (parts of) Brill chapters and articles should be cleared via the Copyright Clearance Centre (CCC). Just go to the CCC Marketplace and search for the book or journal article that you want to re-use material from. Fill out the required information and follow the prompts to acquire the proper permission.
- If this regards the translation of a complete book, you may ask the publishing house to contact our rights department directly with their detailed request. The publishing house should include specific information regarding their publishing plans for the translation (which language, whether or not E-Rights will be required, and the estimated print run and retail price). The publishing house should expect to pay a translation fee for the rights. For more information, please read our Translation Rights page.
