Od djetinjstva je pokazivao interes za historiju, pjesništvo, neobična putovanja i fantastične pripovijesti. Sakupljao je škotske balade i 1802. javio se zbirkom "Minstrelsko pjesništvo sa škotske granice". Na početku je pisao isključivo poeziju s temama iz srednjeg vijeka i škotske historije. Kao moralist nastoji da pobjeđuje dobro. Junaci njegovih romana su hrabri i velikodušni, a pravda na kraju nadjača nepravdu. U svojoj prozi daje dramatične zaplete, viteške običaje i snažne ličnosti, a karakteriziraju ga poznavanje škotske i engleske prošlosti, romantičarska raspoloženja.
