Critics definitely don't understand a lot of things, and horror of actual quality is like, right up there. They panned the first Saw film. Yes, it's not highly rated critically. Beyond laughable. I mean that's just one prime example of how absurd they are.

The primary character of the movies is Art the Clown, and his singular goal of stalking his prey in a brilliant fashion is ultimately fascinating. That's the point of the movies. Which, frankly, is all you actually need for a slasher film. Yes, that's how slasher films work. Freddy, Jason, Chucky, they are the draw of the movie, whether you like it or not. Plenty of people enjoy it because they understand that.
