The contract to purchase the land for Hove Cemetery was signed in 1878, but work began the following year. The first burial took place in 1882. The cemetery itself is on Brighton & Hove City Council's Local List of Heritage Assets; the cemetery chapels are also separately listed, as are the two lodges at the east entrance to the southern part of the cemetery.
