- Dear EugeneZelenko, I'm a portuguese Wikipedia editor. Recently I was editing pages in parishes and municipalities and most of them had outdated flags and coat of arms or didn't had any at all. Some of my uploads were made by me, according to heraldic rules of my country, other were made by official sources. I've licensed them with the same licenses of other flags and coats of Portugal. One of the mentioned files (File:Assembleia municipal ourém.png) is a logo of a official institution, that I thought was ok to upload with the license I've choosed. If I didn't put the correct licenses then I'm sorry. If there is nothing I can do, I am sorry as well, that was supposed to help visually some wikipedia articles. Is there a way I can upload this kind of files for exclusive usage of wikipedia? I really don't understand wikimedia, I've read tons of things about how to use it, Well I'm going to stay at Wikipedia. Thanks for your help and greetings from Portugal! Kind regards. - Please read Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Portugal to find out status of municipalities symbols. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:58, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- I didn't found anything about municipalities on that page. If the symbols I've uploaded are not legal to upload how could all the others be uploaded in the past? Dioluisf (talk) 23:37, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
Delete I have sympathy with you, Dioluisf. Sometimes I feel that Wikimedia Commons does not explain itself to new users well and expects you to have read a whole host material on why your media file may or may not be acceptable to Wikimedia Commons. See if can help guide you through as your files and your comments raise many issues. Firstly one of the major differences between Wikimedia Cpmmons and Wikipedia is the "fair use" of copyrighted material. Wikimedia Commons does not allow the "fair use" of copyrighted material whereas your local Wikipedia project MAY allow it (you will have to check the rules of the Wikipedia project you intend to publish on. This is further explained at Commons:Fair use. Now turning to your flags and coat of arms, we need to establish whether they are copyrighted or in the public domain. This is a complex matter and is explained best at Commons:Coats of arms. I started this message with a stark Delete as you have not provided enough information to ensure the correct license is being used. If you read Commons:Coats of arms then I think you will understand. Having read it, I think you have three alternatives 1) to claim the copyright yourself and add a CC-by-SA license 2) to claim that these are in the public domain (probably because of age) or 3) claim that these are Derivative Works see Commons:Derivative works. By the way, we are not picking on you - it could be that many of the coats of arms and flags in Wikimedia are under the wrong license. There is so much work to do on Commons and despite an army of volunteers, the list grows longer everyday! Greetings from the UK!--Headlock0225 (talk) 16:25, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi @EugeneZelenko and Headlock0225: I agree that you should Delete File:CMO-RCouros Cbernardos.gif, File:CMO-Matas Cercal.gif, File:CMO-Gondemaria Olival.gif, File:CMO-Freixianda RFarrio Formigais.gif. Also Delete File:CMO-Olival.jpg because I intend to make a svg version totally mine. About File:Assembleia municipal ourém.png, I've cropped the image so that the symbol won't appear, and so it is PD-textlogo. About File:CCAPARICA.png it was made by "Sérgio Horta" and he agreed with the usage of the symbols he created by e-mail to Manuel Anastácio and the text of the e-mail is there in portuguese. File:Pt-Ccaparica1.png is a derivated work from File:CCAPARICA.png. --Dioluisf (talk) 17:27, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- And I am really sorry for breaking the rules here in commons, I didn't want to, in fact I care and respect wikimedia rules (I am a rollbacker at pt-wiki). Those files were uploaded before I understood the rules, after that I only uploaded images according to rules. Once again, I am extremely sorry and looking forward to solve this deletion request. Kind regards --Dioluisf (talk) 18:05, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
