Interior of the Mamelon Fort |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
Photograph of the interior of the Mamelon Fort, the The Mamelon Vert. The fort has low walls created from wicker fencing, earth and sandbags. Cannons are spaced at intervals along the walls and cannonballs and other debris litter the ground. By a wall in the foreground there are four uniformed soldiers. Hills can be seen in the distance. During the winter of 1854-55 the Russians built the Kamtschatka redoubt on the strategic Mamelon hillock as part of a series of fortifications to defend Sevastopol. The French captured the redoubt after a heavy bombardment in June 1855. |
