| Description |
English: Depiction of the Rule of Marteloio, from the 1436 atlas of Venetian captain Andrea Bianco - Step 2, calculating the ritorno and avanzo di ritorno. The ship's intended course is from A to B (bearing East), but winds force it to sail actual course from A to C (bearing Southeast-by-east, for 100 miles). From C, ship plots return course bearing East-northeast (ENE). The ritorno (distance it needs to sail on ENE bearing) is obtained from the third column of the Toleta de marteloio (Bianco's table), while the avanzo di ritorno (gain on intended course by this return route) is obtained from the fourth column. |
