Titien a réalisé une série de portraits de Paul III dont les originaux sont à Naples. Ce portrait, comme celui de l'Hermitage ou de Paris, sont des copies. Le modèle utilisé pour cette composition est le portrait du pape Jules II par Raphaël exposé à la London National Gallery
