Object history

This collection was donated to Brighton Museum by Miss Mary Knott Panzera in 1949. The accession register entry notes the objects are from 'Bechuanaland, 1898'

Miss Panzera was the daughter of Colonel F W Panzera, Resident Commissioner of the Bechuanaland Protectorate up to 1915. She is listed on the passenger list of a ship leaving UK for Cape, South Africa in 1907, so it is likely that she visited Bechuanaland herself while her father was working there.

See also R4442 acquired by Colonel F W Panzera, a collection of four pots from Barotseland (now Zambia).

Collections from the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now the Republic of Botswana, are the focus of the 2019 Making African Connections research project.
