Animation showing the Doppler shifting of stellar line as a planet orbits its host star.

Summary

edit
Description
English: This shows the radial velocity method of detecting extra-Solar planets. As a planet orbits its host star, they both orbit the common center of mass (top left). The "wobble" of the star can be detected through the Doppler shifting of stellar absorption features (bottom). The radial velocity curve is made of measurements of the stellar Doppler shift through the planet's orbital period (top right).
