Description

Snow dusts the La Silla Observatory and its family of telescopes in this icy image.

The MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope, the ESO 1-metre Schmidt telescope, the New Technology Telescope (NTT) and the ESO 3.6-metre telescope can be seen from left to right.

Despite being located on the Southern outskirts of the arid Atacama Desert — one of the driest areas on Earth — these telescopes in northern Chile occasionally see snowfall.
