Description

The warship Vasa sank in Stockholm harbor on its first voyage in 1628. The remains were found in the late 1950s, with the pieces still well preserved. The ship was restored over many years. The Vasa was towed to a specially built Vasa Museum in the Djurgården district of Stockholm in 1988. The Vasa Museum was officially opened in 1990..

This photo shows the restoration in a relatively early phase, in 1970. It was not as exciting as I had hoped. The Vasa was in a dark hall called Vasavarvet (Vasa wharf or shipyard), with preservative fluid pouring over the wood. It was also in Djurgården, near the future museum site.

I saw the ship again in 1999, fully restored.
