First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Nice job correcting the perspective on Image:Catedral Metropolitana de Sao Paulo 3 Brasil.jpg. In my architectural photography class, that was my prof's one commandment of architectural photography, that parallel lines are parallel in the picture except in obvious three point perspectives. What is Hugin by the way? Regards, DVD R W 04:33, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hugin is an open-source panorama tool. It can also be used to correct perspective and I followed this tutorial to do so. --Antilived 04:38, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! DVD R W 04:39, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello Antilived - thanks for the 360 Auckland panorama. But the wikipedia page (in its non-high-resolution stage) and the thumb resizing (in the article itself) does not work. Do you know if there is a way to fix that? MadMaxDog (Wikipedia User)

I saw that you traced Image:Kaitak tchn.svg. I'd like to translate it to German - could you provide some help here please? --Thire 20:56, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've added English translation to the Chinese labels, though I am not entirely sure about the translation (eg. Ramp or Apron etc.), but the names of places are according to Wikipedia so they should be correct. --Antilived 03:09, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I think it's very good as it is now. I changed it in the german article to your version. --Thire 12:10, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Antilived!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

copyvio

edit

Sorry the wording is so harsh. i was aware that you, as creator, likely created the image in good faith some years ago. I could have afd'd it, or even suggested you request deletion. I will be sensitive to copyvio tags in the future if i have any reason to believe the creator is contributing in good faith. thanks for the feedback. sorry to lose the image, of course. i found a nice banner image of chichen itza to replace it, but montages can be more appropriate for a portal or intro. thanks for your hard work, i have NO graphics skills, so i wouldnt know how to create a montage if my life depended on it.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:14, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

It was a banner using 5 images, couple of people i think, montaged, with the words "the Mexico portal". I just looked up the artwork in the main mexican museum, and i had no idea the history of art in mexico ( i knew folk art, of course, which i love, but some of the fine arts are great, in addition to rivera and kahlo)Mercurywoodrose (talk) 06:31, 7 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
