Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

License
editPlease elaborate on where you got the license that the element/chemical images you uploaded are released under the license you state? I'll give you 24 hours to respond and clarify this issue before I report them all as copyright violations which could ultimately end with you being banned. The linked site has nothing related to that license that I saw. — raeky (talk | edits) 01:23, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- Contact the email address given at the site, please. Ask woelen at sciencemadness.com using U2U after creating an account if you can't get through. His website does not state that they can be used in the public domain. The owner of the pictures does. Mind you, he may not respond for several days. Here is what he sent me:
Hello, By this I confirm that you may upload these images in Wikipedia articles. They are available for public domain. Just provide a link to their origin and then it is OK to me. Regards, Wilco PS: You may also use the images from the gallery of compounds. I had the impression that you already knew of this, otherwise I would have told you ;-) There also is a page for the elements, just follow the link in the page you found.

- There is no assuming of good faith with copyright violations, I did assume faith by informing you BEFORE they was tagged. After the above comment I'm going to tag them all with "no permission since" and please refer too COM:OTRS for directions on where you shall proceed from here. — raeky (talk | edits) 01:37, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
On second thought, this is rather a huge amount of images. An upload from a website of this size should of been handled as a bulk upload and OTRS established beforehand. I'm going to have a bot tag them with OTRS pending, assuming you are being accurate with this permissions. — raeky (talk | edits) 01:50, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- I hope you noticed the images you were tagging were my own personal images from my chemistry lab, not woelen's images. W. Oelen's images have him as the source, not me. They are also better quality than my images. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 02:00, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- I did, and have reversed it all. — raeky (talk | edits) 02:07, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
You will need to also acquire OTRS permission for http://www.bromicacid.com/ as well as http://woelen.homescience.net/science/index.html. The picture disclaimer on bromicacid.com is not sufficient to imply a free license. I've asked a bot operator to automate tagging all the images that are not "Own Work" with OTRS Pending tag. (see Commons:Bots/Work_requests#Large_batch_of_images_needing_OTRS_tagged). I'm also notifying an OTRS volunteer to look into this matter (Commons_talk:OTRS#Assistance_Needed). — raeky (talk | edits) 02:10, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- I already sent an email to the OTRS team regarding the woelen pictures. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 10:41, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- For note, the OTRS volunteer's work would be easier if you link to those pictures, they're all now in this category Category:Photographs by Wilco Oelen. — raeky (talk | edits) 14:08, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- You'll also need OTRS e-mails for the BromicAcid website, I'll link those pictures below:
Hello Kass,
The images and videos from my website are available under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Please have a look at entry page of my website:
http://woelen.homescience.net/science/index.html
At the end of the page an explicit statement is made about the license and what rights you have in distributing and modifying images. As far as I know this is the license model, used by Wikipedia.
Regards,
Wilco
Is his response to me about the license, although the page he linked too makes no reference to this license, just "All rights reserved." Seems like the license he stated here is different than what you said above? — raeky (talk | edits) 17:54, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- He told me that they "are available for public domain." --98.221.179.18 19:14, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- I donno, he's updated his website now to show the CC license. — raeky (talk | edits) 23:06, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
- I told him what was going on here and he helpfully changed it. --Chemicalinterest aka 98.221.179.18 01:08, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

I saw your request on Help-desk. One note: If you do not get a permission for cc0, I can batch-change all licenses to cc-by-sa as stated on the website. This could save you some time :) I am also willing to review these images. Sincerely -- RE rillke questions? 10:30, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
Oh and don't worry because you "should" upload this files using a bot. OTRS-members can now use my script to batch-insert permissions and OTRS-pending and so on. -- RE rillke questions? 10:49, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
- He put CC-by-SA 3.0 as the license, not public domain. Are there bots that can change it easily? --Chemicalinterest (talk) 11:43, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
- Yes there are and my script. But if he sent an e-mail to OTRS with cc-0 that's even better for us. In case we do not get cc-0 permission, we can use script or bots. -- RE rillke questions? 12:23, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
- This is what he said: "Yes, this is the generally used form in Wikipedia. It allows redistribution and even modification. Regards, Wilco" in reply to my query "So it is CC-by-SA 3.0, not public domain? LK" --Chemicalinterest (talk) 12:52, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
- "Images and videos may be copied, redistributed and modified, provided a link is given to the original work." sounds more being {{FAL}}. But in general it would be a good idea to provide a link to the original, like done here. Since you changed the image names, you'll have to do this by hand. Sorry -- RE rillke questions? 13:31, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
