Need greater checks prior to transfers from Flickr

Hi. It seems that you are transferring file to Commons that are already here. Please would you take longer checking whether we have the files prior to undertaking transfers. We shouldn't need to be undertaking maintenance tasks / deletions "just because". Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:40, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I would for sure, this is clearly not something I do not do on purpose but often files are renamed from the original and that makes duplicate near to impossible to detect. Maybe I miss some tools to perform this check? Fabe56 (talk) 12:06, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

One simple way is to search for the Flickr file ID here on Commons for one of the photos in the album/photoset.

For example, for this Commons photo the Flickr URL is https://www.flickr.com/photos/150111929@N04/53531688632/ and the photo ID is 53531688632.

Before transferring via Flickr2Commons, search for the ID (53531688632) here on Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:MediaSearch&type=image and you can see the photo was already uploaded but with a different name. // sikander { talk } 🦖 16:39, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Aires Libres 2019. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Files with FoP issues

Hi Fabe56, thanks for your contribution, I noticed that you import a lot of cityscape images, but a reminder that some countries like the Philippines, South Korea and UAE do not have the Freedom of panorama (FOP) accepted by Commons. Importing images from these countries showing derivative works such as buildings, sculptures and murals are not accepted as Commons unless they are 1) old enough to be in the public domain (PD), or 2) included in the photo and therefore not considered a copyright infringement, or 3) writted permission is obtained from the copier and submitted to VRT. The FoP of some countries like Japan, Taiwan and the USA only includes buildings, artworks such as sculptres and murals are still not allowed in Commons, Thank you, and happy editing. メイド理世 (talk) 15:44, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello and thank you for transferring many files from Flickr! Could you please do some minimal effort to identify locations while transferring these files? I know that for some files it's not trivial, but e.g. for File:Ceintuurbaan @ Amsterdam (22563552470).jpg it's obvious even if you have never been to Amsterdam. I am particularly surprised that despite clearly large-scale upload you managed to identify this image depicts fog, but not that it depicts Ceintuurbaan... Please try to clean up Category:Unidentified locations in Amsterdam by removing if possible the most obvious cases (those where file name / description unambiguously identify location), and maybe find a way to improve your next uploads... Sorry, I was too fast, actually categories like Category:2015 in Amsterdam as the only category are significantly worse. E.g. in case of File:National Monument @ Dam Square @ Amsterdam (17994492122).jpg it is extremely easy to find the right category but extremely difficult to find this file: Category:2015 in Amsterdam also contains a lot of images classified into more relevant categories, so I found this file only by trying to move it from Flickr myself. I would rather prefer Category:Unidentified locations in Amsterdam as the only category than Category:2015 in Amsterdam as the only category: at least these badly categorised images are in one category. If you can identify all files that you have added into Category:2015 in Amsterdam without categorising them further, can you please add them into content categories or Category:Unidentified locations in Amsterdam please? And the same probably applies to other similar categories if you have done this not only with Category:2015 in Amsterdam... — NickK (talk) 00:24, 27 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
