Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and or licensing of this particular file. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --- There seem to be two versions of the same image, one small (100 kb) and one large (1000 kb or so). I think that the added value to have an image ten times larger is low and the large one should be deleted. For some reason people who download the NASA image tend to favor the larger ones, which is not reasonable.Hektor 20:10, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Chapron_Delahaye.jpg
edit
Thanks for uploading Image:Chapron_Delahaye.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. — Timichal 20:32, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Blocage pour violations de copyright répétées
editBonjour !
90.34.113.8 11:51, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
You uploaded this image which you claim to be your own work. On the upload page you agreed to place it under a Free license but did not specify which one. Please do so by replacing the OwnWork tag with a suitable copyright tag. Oxam Hartog 22:03, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:56, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Hello Hektor,
I made a new svg version of your File:M bahn.jpg. Could you add a valid license like GFDL
or so to the file? Otherwise, both I and the tool derivativeFX don't know which license to use for the new (derived) file. --Michael Kümmling ✐ 09:37, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello Hektor, You uploaded the current image on File:Prisches.jpg over a previous file, I was wondering if you would bother if the two photos were split in two files, so that we would have two pictures of that church? Cheers, --- Darwin Ahoy! 18:04, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
- I would have no problem whatsoever. The second picture is of bad quality unfortunately. I will try to come back there some day. Thanks anyway for checking this kind of things. Hektor (talk) 07:17, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. I splitted the file, and the older image is now at File:Prisches 2.jpg, for your reference. I don't think it is of bad quality. Thanks for allowing this, now Category:Prisches has two images instead of only one. :) --- Darwin Ahoy! 23:32, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
Cordialement, En-bateau (talk) 16:35, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Don't vandalize files.
editRenominating something because you disagree with it being kept is one thing, but vandalizing the licenses of images because you think think it's legitimate is quite another, as you did here and here. Do that again, I won't hesitate in requesting you be temporarily blocked from editing. Fry1989 eh? 01:52, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
- Removing illegitimate tags is not vandalizing. -Hektor
- Yes I'm afraid it is. Removing a valid license because YOU think it's illegitimate is vandalism. I won't tolerate it. You have been told this is too simple, you are going to have to live with it. Fry1989 eh? 19:42, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

- So thinking you are wrong and acting accordingly is vandalism ? what a fine wikimedia contributor you make. Ok let me explain again. The IOC will sue. I am 100 % sure of it. And then there will be a lawsuit between the IOC and the WIkimedia foundation. It will cost money, no matter who eventually wins. It might well happen that the IOC eventually loses, but there will be money spent. So my question is, aren't there better ways to spend the money of the Wikimedia Foundation than to defend the presence of this image on Commons and allow you to have your little ego trip, especially knowing that we can put it in the various wikipedias and claim fair use, which will make no difference to the casual user ? Hektor (talk) 07:39, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- I think the normal process is the IOC asking WMF to remove them. If the WMF decides to with an office action then end of story with no costs. If they decide to keep them then they wait for the IOC to make the next move. Then the lawyers on both sides weigh further costs vs principles. Our choice now should be to wait until the IOC contacts WMF. In other words we should wait for a decision from the WMF. Anyone is free to contact WMF legal liaisons if they wish and give them a heads up. --Canoe1967 (talk) 18:56, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
editA community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Image without license
edit
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Santos-Dumont - Dans L'Air, 1904 (page 85 crop).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Thanks for uploading File:Rosny aîné - Les astronautes - 1960.djvu. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Rosny aîné - Les astronautes - 1960.djvu ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Cordialement, Yann (talk) 10:51, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Yann and Hsarrazin: Je croyais bien faire. Ok, faut-il que je rechange les noms ? Merci. Hektor (talk) 11:13, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Kuremu Sakura (talk) 15:46, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi, you wrote "own work", but Midjourney as author, which seems not to make sense. Also, you put it under PD-algorithm, wich is in line with Commons:AI-generated media#How should AI-generated media be handled?, but you also added a CC-license. --Túrelio (talk) 12:30, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Túrelio: It's fine to also have a CC license, since that is needed for reuse in the UK and Hong Kong. Nosferattus (talk) 19:09, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
