Will you have a look on my changes, please? -- RainerBi 4 July 2005 07:15 (UTC)
- Seems right. I didn't use the CIA factbook as a direct source though, I used one of the flags already here on Commons, but I believe that was from the factbook. I'll change it to the factbook tag. Jon Harald Søby\no na 4 July 2005 07:44 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:T-Detudamo.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

SVG flags
edithello there, thanks for your comments. Could you please point out where on the Commons rules it says that "SVG flags are far better than PNG versions", I must have missed something there? Since already a version of the exact same object exists, I don't quite follow why it needs to be replaced, is there a rule to that? thanks. Gryffindor 22:09, 29 October 2005 (UTC)
- I see and can anyone do the SVG versions or do you need a special programme with that? because in that case you would have to convert all the flags, not just one... Gryffindor 15:12, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- I think [1] can convert more complex flags. Anyone can make SVG flags – I only use Notepad, that's basically all you need. Of course, for flags with ornamental objects (like the eagle in the US Virgin Islands flag), it is very hard (not to say impossible!) to code it by hand, then you'd have to use some sort of program… I'll do the other flags that I am able to do now. Jon Harald Søby\no na 11:58, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
- Hm, don't have Notepad. A new flag has been added, that of Niederösterreich, maybe you could be so kind to convert that one too in order for the list to be consistent? with kind regards.. Gryffindor 19:05, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
- I second that request. Could you please upload the ninth and final Austrian Bundesland-flag? Thanks in advance! en:User:Nightstallion, 22:45, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks! en:User:Nightstallion 22:10, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
- Say, one more thing: Could you move Image:Flag of Tyrol.svg to Image:Flag of Tirol.svg? All the other flags are at the native, German names, only this one uses the English form... Thanks again! Nightstallion 08:06, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
Red Cross/ Red Crescent flags
editHi Jon, thanks for converting the Red Cross and Red Crescent flags to the SVG image format. On the one hand it seems to greatly reduce the file size, on the other hand the flags are much bigger in their dimensions than the PNG versions. Seems like a win-win. One question though, could you convert the rest of the flags related to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement as well? If I'm not mistaken, SVG is a vector-based format so it might be difficult for the Red Lion with sun, but it would be great to have the rest of them converted as well (and maybe the Red Lion is not that difficult, after all). Best Regards, --Uwe 12:45, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- I am only a beginning SVG programmer, and all I know I've learnt through looking at the source file of Image:Flag of Norway.svg. I would convert the others as well, but I don't have a clue on how to do other shapes than rectangles and circles, sorry… Jon Harald Søby\no na 13:03, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
SVG flags again
editHello. You have recently uploaded .svg versions of flags of Austrian states. Good job, but your images are a little bit wrong: there should be a thin black borderline around white area of flag - to avoid mixing it with background. It would be welcomed, if you could add it to your images.
What about service flags (with coats of arms)?
And, by the way: is there on the Web any simple free graphic editor for SVGs? Regards - PM 00:11, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
- The borders shouldn't be in the pictures themself, as this would be representing them the wrong way; borders could be added with a template called {{border}} or something, see Image:Flag of the Red Cross.svg.
- I have only done flags with simple shapes, as I only know how to code the SVG images in a text editor (that's why I haven't done the service flags). As for graphic editors, I think the most common one is Inkscape.org, but I haven't used, so I don't know how it is. Jon Harald Søby\no na 12:03, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
Why did I revert? Well I didn't exactly - you made a modification to remove the black border (fair enough) and I reverted back to the original source SVG[2] I had which was also without the black border - my original upload was a modification I made to this adding a border.
Reason? Well I think it's always best to use the original source where ever possible and when there is no real reason to use another version. Since your version and the source are visually identical, but the source is the original... well it makes sense! Unless you can tell me why a "bigger version" of a scalable format is somehow better? Can't see it myself, the whole point is they can be scaled to anysize so there shouldn't be any diff!
Thanks/wangi 22:19, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, but I've heard people say that the MediaWiki software isn't able to scale up as good as it scales down. Anyways, it doesn't do any harm to have bigger versions, does it? Jon Harald Søby\no na 08:24, 22 November 2005 (UTC)
You can upload images from Vector-Images.com just saving images (in GIF format) from their website. SVG files are only available by paying :( So, I download in gif and then transform them into PNG format. Best regards. --Porao 19:34, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
Renaming
editThough I deleted the account User:Jon Harald Søby, I can't do the renaming because The user "Jon Harald Søby" already exists as it says (may be in the base). I'll try again later on. villy ♦✎ 16:16, 24 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hiya! Ævar told me that the way to do that, is first to rename Jon Harald Søby (on en: it was changed to "Jon Harald Søby (renamed)", then rename Jhs… =) Jon Harald Søby 19:19, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

editHi - do you know who painted this painting, and when, and what it is called? If you could please write to me at w:User_talk:Stbalbach as I do not check here. Thank you! -- 68.55.41.18 16:46, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Nauru map.jpg
edit
Thanks for uploading Image:Nauru map.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}}to release it under the GFDL or{{PD-self}}to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello Jon! Can you chck please, what's wrong with the licence I used by reloading this image from English Wikipedia? I wanted to use this pic on German Wiki, but before this, I need a green light because of the licence. Thank you. --Patrick 23:02, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer. Now I am completly confused. I thought, every Wikipedia has the same rules about Copyright??? --Patrick 19:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Jon. I am totally irritated. Why is nobody deleting this image now? I tried to mark it with every possible sign to delete my mistake --Patrick 21:23, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
- It takes some time before images are deleted here – there are some 3000 images or so in the deletion queue. Jon Harald Søby 22:32, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Colour maps generator?
editI really like your coloured maps eg of the Human Development Index. I have been searching for a tool to convert Excel tables of country statistics into such maps automatically. Do any such tools exist to your knowledge?
