Washington Convention Center photo

edit

MBisanz, I wanted to see if your photo of the DC convention could be used in a book. I saw the various licenses available, and I just wanted to be certain that those licenses, namely copyleft, cover commercial uses.

Yes, commercial use is 100% fine. Thanks for using the image. MBisanz talk 17:19, 7 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

May I state that this is a little ugly, it should have been handled as a {{duplicate}} as the file was in use at sister sites. Admins at Commons need to better handle processing of works and consider works in use at sister sites rather than just thinking that clearing a queue here is the priority.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:26, 27 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Do you trust this uploader's statement? Perhaps you can contact him if you know something about his identity. Its used for the Nighthawk wrestler. I wouldn't upload this kind of racy image personally. Or should it be tagged as npd by an Admin? Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:14, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know. I've gone ahead and tagged it. MBisanz talk 03:33, 27 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

hello; this deletion was incorrect on 2 points:

1. the article about vanessa harding WAS NOT "DELETED FROM en/WP; it's right ther, & i can't even find any indication that it was ever removed. you appear to have, in fact, REMOVED THE ONLY IMAGE WE HAD FOR THIS ARTICLE.

2. commons scope is DIFFERENT from wikipedia's "equivalent" (rules re: notability, etc.). whether or not the article @ wikipedia meets their guidelines, the file's inclusion @ commons is a COMPLETELY SEPARATE MATTER. & you should NOT have deleted the file merely "because the article was removed from wp:en". the action here requires SEPARATE CONSIDERATION, HERE.

even setting aside the fact that THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE WAS NOT REMOVED, such a file probably STILL qualified on commons, falling within scope in MULTIPLE CATEGORIES.

after having reviewed only a handful of your actions here @ commons, it increasingly appears that youi regard you actions her as an "extension" of your wikipedia activity, rather than as a separate projectwith its own rule, processes & goals. if you cannot operate here as a "commons admin" rather than as a "wikipedia admin" who is just visting commons, i would request that you refrain from administrative actions here, & consider if you should continue to have admin-level access @ commons.

hi;

you seem to have the mistaken impression that "uncontested DR" is a policy @ wikimedia commons.

it is NOT!

that rule may apply @ wikipedia, but it does not apply here. please stop using this as a deletion-rationale immediately.

otherwise, i will have to request an emergency review of your status & actions as an admin here.

Lx 121 (talk) 08:23, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

hello again;
just to let you know,i've started a discussion about your activities at [1]. i'm sorry to do this; when i initiated the topic, i was hoping to get a "general ruling" on the matter of "uncontested DR", that i could then cite here, without having to "name names". but it became necessary to provide examples of the problem...
at that point, it became impossible not to cite your activities directly. i would rather have waited to hear back from you before taking further direct action, but after the discussion got started, there really wasnt anything else i could do. particularly as you appear to be the primary (& certainly the most senior) user-admin who closes DRs @ commons with this rationale.

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Renaming files

edit

Hello!

I've embarked on a quite a big project, about half finished today, and wondering if I'm starting to be considered tedious.

I've had a lot of very good help with this now, and we've worked hard to get about 800-900 files renamed. But I did hit a couple of snags - only 2 in all so far! I guess I shouldn't expect to get every little thing way I want it.

On principle though, do you think I'm wrong to claim that I'm also acting for the original uploader in all this work? I don't know how better to document that. Seems some things will can be done easily only for the original uploader, which I am in about 50% of the cases. The other is my assignment predecssor User:EmilEikS.

Here I explained that we'll be adding more posters & would like them to sort in sequence: poster 1973, poster 1974 etc, and that's why I'd like "poster" before the year.

And here I tried to explain that the group also did other F.U.S.I.A. shows on that tour, not just Wild Side Story. The first move there was my mistake.

Any comments, suggestions from you would be appreciated. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 14:51, 21 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

You deleted a file with the same name in 2009 per Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Coat of arms of Sarawak.svg. Are you able to tell whether this is a different file just with the same name or a re-upload of the deleted file? Is the file's licensing now OK for Commons if it is a re-upload? Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

edit

Dear MBisanz

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

edit

Hello MBisanz,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.
