Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:50, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Rudolf or Rudolph Hoffmann
editI've been working on the source of the lithograph of file:Moritz Hermann von Jacobi 1856.jpg, and I discovered your collection of images from the same series (Gallerie ausgezeichneter Naturforscher). I think the artist is Rudolph Hoffmann; your pages use the spelling Rudolf Hoffmann. I've changed a couple of these pages, but I thought I would contact you before changing any others in case there's some other issue involved. Cheers, Easchiff (talk) 06:51, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hello, thank you for your interest in Rud. Hoffmann (this is the spelling of the artist on his lithographs) The modern spelling of Rudolph, Joseph or Carl is Rudolf, Josef or Karl in modern German. I personally prefer Rudolf, Josef and Karl since Google makes an automatic transcription. With my best wishes to New York. --Peter Geymayer (talk) 13:40, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply. I was not aware of the evolution of the spellings of these proper names. In the US, Rudolf is a fairly unusual spelling, and of course we have the famous red-nosed reindeer Rudolph. Respectfully, I think your contributions to commons would be somewhat more accessible if you had retained the older spelling. I actually searched for "Rudolph Hoffmann" within Wikipedia, and did not find the images you've contributed. I did discover them with google, as you noted. The (few) references I've found to Hoffmann beyond Wikipedia also use the older spelling. I discovered Hoffmann's birth & death years (1820-1882) this way: see http://www.avhumboldt.de/?p=8442&pid=111 . If you still prefer Rudolf, one way to make him more visible to search engines would be simply to link to that old biographical article on wikisource: Rudolf Hoffmann, which will appear as Rudolf Hoffmann. Nicht schützbare Fotos (Reproduktionen) – 2-D-Regel
editLieber Peter Geymayer,

Sehr geehrter Herr Geymayer,

File:Johann Gottfried Bremser Litho.jpg
Gruss Zabia (talk) 09:46, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Grupenbildnis Kriehuber
editHallo Herr Geymayer!

editDear Peter you uploaded an image at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alfred_Piatti_Litho.jpg and a musician colleague would like to use it. However he needs a higher resolution image and I wondered if there was a way of obtaining one? Would you mind contacting me to let me know? Many thanks Mccapra (talk) 13:20, 11 December 2019 (UTC)
