source for Image:Phaseolus.jpg

edit

Hi. What is the source of Image:Phaseolus.jpg? Did you take the photo? / Fred J 21:23, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have also added no source templates to your uploads of Jimbo, as I also suspect you did not take those photos yourself. Photo copyright belongs to the photographer -- you do not have the right to release derivate works of them into the public domain. Thanks for your understanding. / Fred J 21:28, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's ok. It can be confusing... I've corrected the license of the Jimbo photo. Important: When you make a derivative work, please always include a link to the original work. / Fred J 16:05, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
(PS. även om jag föredrar konversation på engelska, kan du skriva på svenska till mig om du tycker det är lättare)

Since these images are derivative you can't release them into the public domain. You have to follow the licenseing terms of the original images.Geni 21:06, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually depends on size and whether raster or not. For simplicity, I'll change the copyrights, and not mess about digging into eligibility or not. That will be for another time. Rursus 14:55, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mathematical subcategories

edit

could you please in future put mathematical pictures into suitable subcategories, Darapti

Nope! I made a crude classification of about 200 images or so! Then I made a reclassification of 200 japanese images, and a sorting of about 50 old constellation images into a couple of new subcategories, and then the time was 22.30 and I was pretty sleepy and had no more energy to classify. You do that, because I'm better at classifying images in general categories, and not so good at classifying in specialized categories, so you are better at that and if we collaborate with our respective energies and gifts, the world will soon become wonderful! Hmm! I deserve a thanks – so hereby I thank myself! Rursus 10:02, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Categorization

I notice that you are adding incorrect categories to uncategorized files, like in this edit. If you are unable to find better categories, I strongly advise you to stop any classification activity in this project.

Competent users have other occupations than the correction of your glaring errors, and the cleaning of categories you have cluttered: classification is not for dilletantes. --Juiced lemon 19:44, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you are going to migrate an image, A) the GFDL requires you provide a URI reference (i.e. a web link) to the original material, so please link the original don't just name it, and B) you should migrate the description too, otherwise you are losing important information (such as where the data came from). Please don't feel guilty about Juiced lemon's troubles: he has a long history of them, and his treatment of you was not (by a long shot) the only thing leading to the block.

J.l. is an amazing contributor, but he has a bad habit of being, well, mean. He's upset a whole gaggle of people over the last couple of years, and we've been trying (hard!) to help him.

I'm just leaving this note to make sure you know that you're not implicated in this. It's a tough situation that thoughtful people have spend a lot of time on, and I hope you won't feel that it reflects on the commons community as a whole (we're generally a very laid back crowd). --SB_Johnny | PA! 23:08, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

That was very kind of you. But since it occurred to me that JL was an important contributor, I felt a little sorry, and made a try to plead to him to make a deal with you and consider improving his rough sides. We need contributors, simply put. Rursus 12:32, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rursus! I have changed Image:Futhark24.svg and Image:Futhark24-editable.svg since the p and ï were swapped, compared with the original image Image:Old Futhark Runic alphabet.png (which was corrrect). Can you check if I did it right? Best regards // Mankash (talk) 11:32, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's corrrect. Have to kill my computer now. Rursus (talk) 14:40, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry if it's tjatigt with messages everywhere... That's always a problem when you're talking with users on other projects. You never know where and when they (or you) will check it. Kind regards // Mankash (talk) 15:49, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
"Tjatigt" is a little troublesome to translate: "nagging", can't be used in that context, while "naggative" – the most correct translation there, will get most users raise their eyebrows. Sometimes Swedish is a little superior over other languages, but just sometimes. Rursus (talk) 13:11, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The text for the rune cweorth appears to read "cpeorð", with a plain regular "p" (not a Wynn at all). Also, the glyphs you use for Yogh and Wynn are slightly smaller than the other letters, but for clarity and readability they need to be a little bit bigger than the other letters... AnonMoos (talk) 08:11, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't only appear! It actually reads "cpeorð". Since I've copied someone else's file, it seems I've copied an error. I'll fix it. As for the too small yogh and wynn, I can do less, because I'm dependent on converting from DejaVu Sans font. We'll see if it gets better this time, or not. Rursus (talk) 20:05, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
The font DejaVu sans has been improved since, so I presume yogh and wynn looks better. However, I'm uncertain the "cweorth" spelling is better than "cweorð". I would'nt spell it [kʷɛorþ], instea I would spell it [kʷɛorð]. Rursus (talk) 20:18, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't suggesting you change the spelling, I was just transcribing in basic Latin alphabet letters. However, in phonemic terms, there was no distinctive contrast between the sounds [θ] and [ð] in Old English; they were in en:complementary distribution. Yogh looks better than in the old font version, but wynn is still kind of small where it should be big, and the value of cweorth is still given as "cp"... AnonMoos (talk) 21:47, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, missed. I'll fix that too. Rursus (talk) 22:30, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Now changed properly (?) exchanging p for wynn. But wynn doesn't look right in DejaVu Serif, that's a fact. Rursus (talk) 22:48, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I semi-manually touched up the file, magnifying the size of three of the wynns by 120%, and moving up the vertical position of the fourth by one unit. You presumably could do pretty much the same in the program you use to generate the file... AnonMoos (talk) 02:27, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I thank you. Rursus (talk) 12:06, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

(Confusion)

edit

Hello--you actually have your 'Oak' and 'Ash' symbols turned around. Oak does not have the bent line. Reference 'Hammer of the Gods' by Swain Wodening.

My sources: "Runor", by Lars Magnar Enoksen (ISBN 91-88930-32-7) and Unicode consortium code chart Runic tells us otherwise: the one with the bent line is ac meaning "oak" (Swedish "ek"), and the one with straight lines is æsc meaning "ash" (the tree, Swedish "ask"). If Hammer of the Gods tells us otherwise, that book is in error. Please sign your text with ~~~~ so I automatically get your signature. Rursus (talk) 17:16, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, Rursus!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Religious syms.svg

edit

Hello,

As we know the religion named 'Islam' does not have a symbol. A crescent and star is more a national symbol, rather than a religious one. Therefore the Arabic script for God could be used to represent the Islamic faith. Regards. Runehelmet (talk) 14:42, 24 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

That could then also be said of Judaism: the star of David is just a national symbol, and the development of all "religion logotypes" could be said to share a similar evolution before becoming standardized. However, you might be right insofar as muslim regard symbols, but since I'm not a muslim, I don't know. I would prefer some muslim consensus as a basis for improving File:Religious syms.svg, or that someone else exercises WP:BOLD. Rursus (talk) 09:50, 25 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
