In early editions, the Shulhan Arukh was printed as running text in a single volume. Thus the entire Shulhan Arukh is usually compact enough to be uploaded in a single file. The glosses of Moses Isserles were already included in early printings, quickly becoming a must all subsequent editions.

  • First edition (Venice, 1565)
  • First edition with the glosses of Moses Isserles (Cracow, 1571)

Eventually, such compact volumes became obsolete as numerous commentaries began to be added, surrounding the Shulhan Arukh and turning it into a small island of text on the page in the midst of a sea of commentaries. Printing the Shulhan Arukh thus became a huge endeavor in subsequent centuries, involving massive multi-volume sets of folio size.

  • Vilna, 1880 edition
