English: The House of Medici was a powerful and influential Florentine family during the Renaissance, their wealth and influence initially derived from the textile trade guided by the guild of the Arte della Lana. Becoming first bankers, and later politicians, clergy and nobles, the Medici attained their greatest prominence during the 15th through 17th centuries, as members became leading figures, initially in both Florence and Italy, and eventually in Europe. The direct male line of the Medici became extinct in 1737 with Giovan Gastone de' Medici.
