Frequently Asked Questions
How long are these global health opportunities for?
These opportunities vary widely in length. In general, most opportunities require a commitment of at least 2 weeks, to get acquainted with the health systems and deliver real impact on patients. For medical deployments, the deployment length can range from 2 weeks to 3+ months.
Are these paid opportunities or unpaid? Are travel costs covered?
It depends. Most NGO medical deployments will be paid with travel costs covered. However, there are some NGOs that cannot afford to pay physicians, and these opportunities are unpaid but generally with travel costs covered. Most visiting / volunteer physician programs are unpaid; however, funding may be available from either the hospital or H1’s partners to cover travel costs if required.
How does the credentialing process work for these global health opportunities?
The NGO or hospital will handle all of your credentialing requirements with the local government. You will most likely be required to produce your CV, passport, medical license, and board certification documentation. H1 is not responsible for credentialing.
What exactly is H1 Connect’s role with these medical deployments and volunteer opportunities? What is H1 Connect responsible for? Who handles logistics?
Think of H1 Connect as your “matchmaker”. We aggregate global health opportunities from our partners (primarily NGOs), post “applications'' on our platform on their behalf for all users to see and apply, and we actively recruit qualified healthcare professionals to fill those slots. We then share these applications with our partners and help them screen for top candidates. If our partners are interested in one of the candidates, we connect the two parties over email.
What type of healthcare professionals can apply? Any particular specialties? Can medical students apply?
All healthcare professional types and specialties are welcome to join the H1 Connect network, including medical students. Each opportunity posting will include specifics on which specialties are needed. The only requirement to join the H1 Connect network is either a medical license, or proof of enrollment in an educational program to obtain a medical license.
I am not a doctor, can I still join H1 Connect?
Yes! We encourage all healthcare professionals to join the network, including nurses, midwives, physician assistants, students, etc. We are frequently asked by our partners to recruit for non-doctor roles.
You mention tools and resources to increase my marketability for these global health opportunities. What are those tools and resources?
Today, H1 Connect helps doctors market themselves by having them fill out forms aimed at providing the critical information each of our partners need to screen candidates. Soon, H1 Connect will be launching a feature for doctors to create and export their “H1 Profile” that can be used to apply for all opportunities. H1 Connect is also in the process of partnering with humanitarian aid educational programs that will be listed on the platform. These programs can give you certificates that increase your odds of being selected for a global health initiative.
Can you help me connect with other healthcare professionals like myself interested in global health?
Yes! After you sign up for H1 Connect, you can join our H1 WhatsApp community. We have multiple groups you can browse and join based on your interests. If you want to create a new WhatsApp group in the community, just let the admins know and we can create one for you!
