Brainiac was a intergalactic criminal from the planet Colu and the leader of the Dark Circle, who fought Superman, The Flash and Supergirl.
History
Attacking Metropolis
Brainiac first appeared attacking the city while fighting Superman with several drones at his aid, causing destruction as they fought before the Flash came to assist the latter. The fight continued onward before Brainiac went on using a Kryptonite bullet that weakened Superman and nearly killed him, however, Flash tries to intervene in the bullet's shoe before channeling the Speed Force, thus causing him to travel to an alternate reality where the Justice Society was at war with the Nazis and later facing Aquaman's forces with his advisor being the culprit behind the events. Upon returning to his reality, The Flash manages to snatch the Kryptonite bullet and aim it at Brainiac's head, killing him at that point.
Restored by the Dark Cicle
However, at one point, he formed the Dark Circle thousands of years later before the 31st century upon tasking them to clone a variety of himself just so his work could be continued. With the first clones of Brainiac to have ever gone evil, Brainiac 2 was an assassin, Brainiac 3 tried to overthrow the united planets with mind-controlling methods, and the latest was Brainiac 4, a serial killer. Though out of all of them, Brainiac 5 was far from evil and is genuinely good at heart, he was discriminated against due to others thinking he's just like his "family".
As for The Dark Circle, they were known for being fanatical terrorists who were behind every last act of destruction, wreaking havoc, and providing highly-advanced weapons to other terrorists (Solomon Grundy is an example of this) with them observing from the shadows, possibly under the prestige of reviving the real Brainiac at hand and performing their tasks under his name. At some point centuries later, Brainiac had gained a new body by assimilating the three other Brainiac clones with Mon-El, a Legionnaire student at the Legion Academy, being the second-in-command, with intentions of infiltrating the base just to use the Miracle Machine to rewrite all of reality under his image.
Legion of Super-Heroes
Prior to his return, the Dark Circle committed various acts under regard to his return and their intention, such as having Solomon Grundy attack the city with one of their weapons, killing a few guards and a scientist to retrieve Brainiac's head, sabotaging and killed one of Triplicate Girls' clones by Mon-El, and later tricking Brainiac 5 into opening the vault where the Miracle Machine was kept away with Supergirl stabbed with Kryptonite by Mon-El. Brainiac would reveal himself before Brainiac 5 as the mastermind and leader of the Dark Circle who tended him over the centuries and later built a new body out of his clones just so he could achieve purging the universe of chaos and rot, only leaving those superior standing on top, his true intentions over using the Miracle Machine. He then justifies that his actions will allude him as a "savior" to all once he bends all of reality to his will and intends to make Brainiac 5 become a part of his body after Supergirl is dead, however, 5 manages to use a smoke bomb to escape from Brainiac's presence along with Supergirl, sending Mon-El and his forces to capture them.
Upon using the Miracle Machine, Brainiac proceeds to rewrite reality before Supergirl and Brainiac 5 tried to stop him, only for him to use the machine to start alternating everything to his very image, in which those who thought of themselves as equal will be eradicated along with those who pose as a strong threat to the latter, thus freezing everyone around him and outside the universe. As the process has begun, it would eventually reach other planets as well, also intending to disrupt them should they ever defy Brainiac's will, however, Brainiac 5 manages to outsmart Brainiac by thinking he and the other clones were capable of surpassing, allowing the clones to revolt and tear Brainiac apart upon fighting for control over the machine, thus killing him.
However, with Brainiac dead and no one controlling the machine, it won't stop until all of reality unravels and tears the fabric of space and time, which Supergirl and Brainiac 5 were able to put a stop to Brainiac's doing by sending the Miracle Machine to a different reality.
