Candlemaker (New Earth)

The Candlemaker is an extradimensional egregore linked to Dorothy Spinner of the Doom Patrol.

Initially the Candlemaker was an egregore, created by unconscious tensions that surround historical crisis moments. In other words, it's the avatar of such possible menaces of the 20th century as World War III and the nuclear bomb. It was removed from the physical plane of existence eons ago. One day it discovered an opportunity to escape into the physical realm in the form of Dorothy Spinner, who had the ability to bring imaginary creatures to life. Dorothy initially manifested the Candlemaker as a friend to help her overcome her fear of the dark, but upon learning that candles were often associated with the dead she quickly came to fear him.[1] It squeezed into her subconscious but found itself trapped there. Taking the form of the Candlemaker, it waited for the opportunity to break free of its mental prison.

It finally got his chance when Dorothy, while being bullied by a group of young boys, was contacted by the Candlemaker, who gave her three wishes. Her first wish was for the death of one of the bullies. One of them (Bernard Muller) was later found in a field, disembowelled and crucified.[2] After this incident, Dorothy resolved to keep the Candlemaker locked in her mind. Unfortunately, the Candlemaker would appear once again during both the Men from N.O.W.H.E.R.E./Telephone Avatar incident (making it the second wish that has the Candlemaker killing Telephone Avatar). Ultimately, Dorothy made her third and final wish for the resurrection of murdered Doom Patrol teammate Joshua Clay, this last wish gave Candlemaker its freedom into the physical world. It still granted her wish but killed Joshua itself.[3]

Now in the physical world, the Candlemaker quickly possessed an android made from nano-machines that were created by the Doom Patrol's leader, Niles Caulder. After swiftly killing Caulder, the Candlemaker used his newfound body to try and destroy the world, starting by first devouring the souls of the world, before planning to destroy the remaining physical shell afterwards. On his rampage he managed to kill and wound several members of the Doom Patrol but was ultimately stopped by the team after Robotman and Doc Magnus managed to deactivated the nano-machines that made the Candlemaker's android body, leaving him vulnerable to be 'unwished' from existence by Dorothy.[4]
