Green Lantern Villains

The Green Lanterns from Earth had a number of enemies, both on Earth and in outer space. While Alan Scott faced mostly petty thieves, his successors faced intergalactic threats like Sinestro, Star Sapphire and Atrocitus, as well as the Lantern Corps those villains lead.

Enemy Lantern Corps

Notable Villains

  • Krona: A villainous former Guardian of the Universe. He has massacred countless lives and created the Anti-Monitor.
  • Manhunters: before of Green Lantern Corps creation the Guardians of the Universe created the Manhunters to bring peace in the universe. However, the Manhunters became obsessed with the act of 'hunting' criminals. Their code, "No Man Escapes The Manhunters", became more important to them than seeing justice done.
  • Mongul I: Along side with Cyborg Superman destroyed Coast City and is an intergalactic tyrant.
  • Weaponers of Qward: Along with Sinestro, the Qwardians are also responsible of the creation of the Sinestro Corps, because they forged the first Yellow Lantern Ring for the renegade Lantern. They clashed constantly with the Green Lantern Corps, waging war against the Guardians of the Universe.
    • Anti-Green Lantern Corps: A Qwardian rip-off of the Green Lanterns. This army was equipped with Antimatter Power Rings, whose beams were capable of destroying anything (and anyone) made of Positive Matter.[1]
    • General Fabrikant: A mastermind who orchestrated a massive invasion on Oa, and, disguised as a child, attacked Hal Jordan on Earth.[2]
  • Guardians of the Universe: Although they are the creators of the Green Lantern Corps and they are highly respected by them, the Guardians also gained a reputation of being very secretive and distrustful about their Corps. Due to how ineffective their methods seemed, they become disillusioned and create the villainous Third Army and the Alpha Lantern Corps.
    • Appa Ali Apsa: a Guardian who was stripped of his immortal powers after showing "emotional weakness."[3] The other Guardians left him alone on Oa to look over the GLC during their absence.[4] Following the first destruction of the Central Battery[5], Appa went mad due to the solitude, and he tapped Oa's power to steal cities from different planets and held them hostage to keep him company (a patchwork that would eventually be known as "Mosaic World"). The rogue Guardian was ultimately defeated when Hal Jordan called the other Guardians from their retreat and combined their energies to overpower him.[6]
  • Volthoom: The original enemy of the Green Lantern Corps and pretty much the reason for the Corps existence. He possesses a phantom ring, which allows him control over the whole emotional spectrum, but also makes him unstable.

Recurring Minor Villains

  • Goldface
  • Hector Hammond: A genius who evolved himself into a man of the future with a meteor. His futuristic brain grants him many powers that make him a very dangerous foe to Green Lantern.
  • The Shark: a shark whose evolution accelerated thousands of years due to exposure to atomic waste. He earned a humanoid form and telepathic abilities, which he used to entangle in physical and mental combat against Green Lantern.
  • Sonar: Bito Wladon used his knowledge of science to his advantage to create weapons that allowed him to fire devastating blasts of sound, becoming the "Master of Sound." Sonar's goal is to make his nation a more notorious one, expanding its influence in the world.[7] He clashed on many occasions against the Green Lanterns of Earth and the Justice League.[8]
  • Evil Star II: A scientist and lone survivor of the planet Aoran who gained immortality and developed an evil personality by absorbing the energy of the stars. He harnesses that energy in his Star-Bands, a device as powerful as a Power Ring, and with the help of his little Starlings, he steals more solar energy from different stars. His attempts to steal the energy of Earth's sun led Evil Star to confront Green Lantern in many occasions.

Evil Alternate Versions

  • The Dawnbreaker: An alternate Bruce Wayne from the Dark Multiverse and a rogue Green Lantern. He massacred his world's Green Lanterns, subjugated Coast City and attempted to kill Hal Jordan.
  • Power Ring: The evil version of Hal Jordan from Earth-Three, member of the Crime Syndicate.

Minor Villains

  • Aerialist: a circus acrobat equipped with an electromagnetic suit and weapons who had a vendetta against the Ferris Aircraft company. He was one of the earlier villains of Hal Jordan.
  • Bloch Family: Conrad Bloch had a personal grudge against the Ferris family and made it his purpose in life to ruin their company. His sons, Benjamin and Jason Bloch, carried out his dying wish to destroy the Ferris, even when the Green Lantern interfered in their plans.
    • Javelin: A man equipped with weaponized javelins, hired by Bloch to steal equipment of Ferris Aircraft and build a bomb to destroy the company.
    • Demolition Team: A team of villains with a construction motif, also hired by Bloch to rampage through the company's facility.
  • Bolphunga the Unrelenting: a legendary intergalactic prize fighter whose hunt for a worthy opponent lead him to "the most feared and mysterious" Green Lantern of them all: Mogo, the living planet.
  • Brutus Force
  • Controllers: An offshot of the Guardians of the Universe. The Conrollers departed from their Maltusian brothers and attempted to fulfill the same goals through different methods, namely the creation of their own Corps: the Darkstars.
    • Lord Daalon: a rogue Controller who, in pursuit of restoring order to the universe, created three artificial being in the image of the Triarch, gods of Maltusian legends who would make the universe anew. It took the combined efforts of the Green Lantern Corps, Darkstars, and L.E.G.I.O.N. to stop the crisis.[9]
  • Crumbler: a minor criminal equipped with a glove capable of disrupting atoms. He crossed paths with Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Black Canary, but the heroes defeated him and stopped his plans of sabotaging his father's construction company.
  • Doctor Light: A supervillain with light-based powers who crossed paths with Green Lantern in repeated occasions, usually drawn to Green Lantern's energy.
  • Doctor Polaris: a physician who developed magnetic powers, as well as a split personality, turning him into a deranged supervillain.
  • Doctor Ub'x: sworn archenemy of Green Lantern Ch'p. He was a conqueror with great knowledge of science and magic. His villain days were over after he realized he and Ch'p were the only H'lvenites left from the pre-Crisis universe.
  • Duality: Duality: an energy construct created by a Guardian to find and test the rookie Green Lantern Kyle Rayner in combat.
  • Eclipso: an evil entity who was tied to the human Bruce Gordon, who worked at Ferris Aircraft for a time. Eclipso attacked the company many times, trying to steal their solar-based equipment. He also managed to possess both Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and Star Sapphire.[10]
  • Effigy
  • Ferenc Aldebaran: A magician from the 58th Century who confronted Green Lantern in his "Pol Manning" persona.
  • Flicker: an intergalactic mercenary and head-hunter who offered his service to various clients, mostly for kidnapping people and selling them in slave rings.
  • Grayven: Being the third son of Darkseid, this New God attempted to reclaim his royal place on Apokolips by slaughtering a series of planets, crossing paths with the Darkstars and the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner in a brutal battle on Rann.
  • The Headmen: the despot leaders of the planet Garon who used the Cerebro-Ray to keep their subjects loyal to them. They were ultimately defeated by Green Lantern Hal Jordan, with the help of the Omega Men.[11]
  • Invisible Destroyer: One of the first supervillains to confront Hal Jordan. He was a manifestation of Dr. Martin Phillips' unconscious mind.
  • Lamplighter: a nuclear researcher gone blind who developed the technology to alter the molecular structure of matter, a.k.a. transmutation. However, the "ultra light" allowed him to see to some extent, adopting the Lamplighter persona and starting a short-lived criminal career.
  • Legion: In the Emerald Dawn version of Green Lantern's origin, the enemy known as Legion, a hive mind capsuled in a yellow armor, was the one responsible for Abin Sur's death, causing his starship to crash on Earth.[12]
  • Major Disaster: a crook with the ability to cause natural disasters. He discovered Green Lantern's identity (Hal Jordan) and confronted the hero on various occasions. He also _targeted The Flash.
  • Major Force: An unstable villain of Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner, he is the killer of Kyle's girlfriend Alexandra DeWitt and stuffed her in a refrigerator.
  • Myrwhydden: originally a villain of Abin Sur, Myrwhydden is a wizard who was locked inside the Green Lantern's ring. When the ring was passed on to his successor, Myrwhydden attacked Hal Jordan, thinking it was his old enemy.
  • Ohm: a minor criminal who stole an electrical armor from S.T.A.R. Labs. He's the first super-villain to face Kyle Rayner.

  • Purgatory: Paul Christian was a crippled man who miraculously recovered his legs when Kyle Rayner shared a fraction of his power. Still, Paul desired more, so the demon Neron enhanced his powers, with the condition of killing Green Lantern.

  • Scarecrow: Due to his obsession with fear, Scarecrow has always had his eyes on a Yellow Lantern ring. He once created a device that would harness the ring's power without actually wielding one.
