The griffins, griffons, or gryphons are legendary creatures with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle with its talons on the front legs.
History
In Greek mythology, the griffin is a sacred beast to the god Phoebus Apollo along with the wolf and the swan, standing at his side on Mount Olympus.[1]
According to poet Aristeas of Marmora (Aristeas the Raven), who heard the tale from the Issedonians, the gryphons were guardians of the gold in mythical Arimaspia where the one-eyed Arimaspians fought them to try (and always failed) to steal it.[2]
A gryphon is one of three enormous mythical beasts guarding the Palace of Dreams in the Dreaming, along with the Royal Wyvern and the "Hippogriff" (actually a winged horse). After the previous gryphon died, the Dream-King sent to the Queen of All Gryphons in the mountains of Arimaspia for the noblest and bravest of her subjects and, after centain contests of strength and wit, the honor fell to the one who would become the new gryphon of the Guardians of the Gate.[3]
