I don't want the money, the lifestyle, none of that. I don't want any of that back. Just maybe a little bit of my soul. Do a little tinkering, make some upgrades, slap on a new coat of paint... and who knows? Maybe a hero can be born out of all this yet. Jake Chill
Jake Chill was a security guard at Wayne-Powers, working directly under Mr. Fixx. He hit rock bottom after murdering Warren McGinnis, until he decided to become the antihero Vigilante.
History
Origins
At the age of six, Jake Chill vowed he wouldn't become his great-grand uncle, how lived his life in guilt after murdering two people. As an adult, he became a security guard at Wayne-Powers, eventually being promoted to the secretive branch called the Quiet Squad. When Harry Tully and Warren McGinnis undercover the shady dealing of the CEO, Jake was called to help kidnap Tully. When Warren didn't get the message, Mr. Fixx took the squad to McGinnis' home. Still not cooperating, Fixx ordered Chill to put him down.[1]
Shaken by what he had done, his guilt worsened when he watched the funeral and he saw Warren's family. After the squad failed to protect Powers and Fixx from Batman, they were let go from the company. One night, Jake came home to find his apartment getting burglarized. Going berserk, he was able to beat up the criminals well enough to scare them off. Chill then decided to repurpose his old security guard gear for good.[1]
10,000 Clowns
Early into his career, Jokerz strapped bombs to their chest and committed suicide bombings. At one scene, Batman, unaware of the culprits, attacked a masked Jake, believing him to behind it. After explaining that he was a new superhero, Batman tried to convince him the city didn't need vigilantes. Jake found this ironic coming from Batman, but this did inspire him to take on the mantle of "Vigilante". The two decided to team-up and caught up to the clown, who revealed she was working for the Joker King while Jake deduced she had been drugged. As more explosions rang out across the city, the two decided to split up.[2]
They would eventually regroup, meeting-up with Catwoman and Dick Grayson along the way.[3] Batman's ally, Mr. D, was able to remotely disable the explosives and release an antitoxin. During the confusion; however, the group was separated from Batman.[4] The three found him battling Joker King in the in-complete wing of Gotham Mercy. The Joker's sister, Dana Tan, also arrived and was taken hostage. She was able to break free, but he pulled her off a ledge. Luckily, Batman was able to catch Dana, while Joker King got caught by some rope.[5]
Mark of the Phantasm
Jake was attacked by Phantasm for the murder of the Warren McGinnis.[6] He called Batman for backup and the two were able to knock her out the building. Vigilante revealed his past to Batman, enraging the Dark Knight who decided to beat him.[7] Batman's Batsuit short-circuited, allowing Vigilante to escape. Hoping to prove himself, Jake tracked down Chucko's Jokerz.[8] Underestimating them, Vigilante was captured and infected with Joker Venom.[9] Batman tried to come to his aid, even helping him escape the Jokerz and Phantasm, but he succumbed to the toxin.[10]
