The origins of the Veritas Society are unknown. By all accounts, the society appropriated the Kawatche legend of Naman, whom they renamed the "Traveler". At some point prior to World War II, Veritas had acquired a piece of a device, believed to allow them to control the TravelerThe Veritas Society was a secretive organization with many important figures of industry as members.

History

The origins of the Veritas Society are unknown. By all accounts, the society appropriated the Kawatche legend of Naman, whom they renamed the "Traveler". At some point prior to World War II, Veritas had acquired a piece of a device, believed to allow them to control the Traveler, which they had a watchmaker hide inside a clock.

Around 1989, Dr. Virgil Swann founded the modern version of Veritas, after having received a message from the stars, announcing the imminent arrival of a child from the stars. He recruited Lionel Luthor and Bridgette Crosby, along with the Queen and Teague families. Thomas Wayne was approached but declined membership.

The society soon found itself divided, with Lionel believing that they should control the Traveler, while Swann and Robert Queen opposed it. This dispute lead to Lionel having Robert Queen and his wife Laura killed. Afterwards, Lionel went to Smallville to meet the Traveler in October 1989. Lionel suspected two boys for being the Traveler, but one tested negative to tests and he left the other in the care of the Kent family of Smallville. Sometime after this, the Veritas society was disbanded for unknown reasons.

The surviving members of Veritas would all be killed over the next 19 years. Virgil Swann passed away from unknown causes in the spring of 2005. His daughter accused Lionel of killing him, but this was never proven. The same year, Bridgette Crosby was murdered by Jason Teague (son of Veritas members Edward Teague and Genevieve Teague), over a stone in her possession, which was connected to the believed Traveler. Shortly after, Genevieve Teague was killed by Margaret Thoreaux, while trying to acquire another stone in the possession of Lana Lang. The next day, Jason was killed in the second meteor shower in Smallville. The deaths of his family prompted Edward Teague to go underground, until he was killed by Brainiac in 2008. A few weeks earlier, Lionel had been murdered by his son Lex, who was trying to uncover the secrets of Veritas and the identity of the Traveler.
