Mulan and Shang

After Mulan disguises herself as a man to take her father's place in the Imperial Army, she meets Li Shang at a military camp after accidentally causing a brawl. When Mulan first lays eyes on Shang, she is bewildered by how handsome he looks and struggles to maintain her cover when he chastises her for causing the brawl. When Mulan tells him that her name is "Ping" and gives Shang her conscription notice, he is surprised to learn she is the "son" of Fa Zhou, a retired war hero.

The next day, when Shang starts training the recruits, Mulan is amazed on how muscular he looks and is impressed by his fighting skills. However, due to the constant bullying from Yao, Ling, and Chien Po and Mushu trying to improve her training by cheating, Mulan is looked down upon by Shang who sees her as not the quality type for a soldier. One night, Mulan is confronted by Shang who orders her to go home and dismisses her from the unit as he believes she is a failure. However, Mulan refuses to give up and decides to complete Shang's challenge in retrieving arrow he has shot onto to the top of a pillar. She successfully completes the challenge which is witnessed by Shang that he allows her back into the unit while growing impressed with her progress in completing her training.

After Mulan and the other recruits complete their training, Mulan overhears Chi-Fu voice his disapproval to Shang on being captain and refuses to have him and his troops be sent into battle. She tries to cheer Shang up with a playful suggestion that they beat Chi-Fu, but succeeds in telling Shang that she believes him to be a great captain. When Mushu notes Mulan is in love with Shang, she tries to deny it, but ends up smiling as if she realizes she is in love with Shang.

After Shang retrieves a letter from his father (actually forged by Mushu), Mulan joins Shang in preparing for battle against the Huns. When coming across a village that has been attacked by the Huns, leaving no survivors, Mulan comforts Shang when he discovers his father has perished during the village massacre. She then receives a gentle pat on the shoulder from Shang and follows him to continue their fight against the Huns. Later, after Mushu accidentally gives away the unit's position to the Huns, Shang orders several troops to help Mulan retrieve the cannons before getting to safety just in time. When Mulan takes the army's last cannon and runs out to the battlefield alone, Shang follows her so she does not get killed. After Mulan fires the cannon into a mountain, triggering an avalanche to stop the Huns, she grabs Shang's arm so they can get to safety. When Shang gets caught in the avalanche, Mulan risks her life to save him and carries his unconscious body while riding on her horse, Khan. When Mulan and Shang are rescued from the avalanche by their unit, Mulan is thanked by Shang for saving his life where he starts to see her as a trusted ally.

However, after Mulan sustains injuries from Shan Yu earlier before the avalanche, she is treated for wounds, leading her to be exposed as a woman. When Mulan realizes Shang discovers her secret, she tries to explain things to him, but Shang is shocked and angry as Chi-Fu drags Mulan out of the medical tent and proceeds to expose her to the rest of the soldiers. As Mulan is backlashed by Chi-Fu, she tries to explain to Shang that she joined the army to protect her father and never means to deceive him or anyone while pretending to be a man. Yet, when Shang prepares to execute Mulan due to women being forbidden from joining the army, Mulan accepts her fate until Shang decides to spare her life as part of a debt, he owes her for saving his life before leaving with the rest of the army.

Just then, when Mulan discovers Shan Yu and several of his men have survived the avalanche after it passed, she rushes to warn Shang of the Huns' survival, but Shang refuses to believe her as she has lied to him about her identity. However, Shang realizes Mulan has been telling the truth when he spots Shan Yu standing on the roofs of the royal palace right when his falcon returns his sword and before several Huns capture the Emperor and barricade the palace. When Mulan recruits her friends, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po in rescuing the Emperor, Shang, although hesitant at first, decides to follow Mulan's lead and they use the same skills Shang has taught her to get into the palace.

Once they are inside the palace, Mulan has Shang go rescue the Emperor while she, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po fight off the Huns. As soon as they successfully manage to rescue the Emperor, Mulan is horrified to see Shang getting beat up by Shan Yu that she decides to help him instead of joining her friends in getting to safety. As Mulan tends to Shang, he attempts to protect her as Shan Yu is about to attack him in anger, but Mulan stops him from killing Shang by revealing she has been responsible for destroying his army, leading Shan Yu to _target her, much to Shang's horror.

After Shan Yu's demise, Mulan is protected by Shang from Chi-Fu who arrogantly ignores the fact Mulan has saved China. Shang defends Mulan as a hero when Chi-Fu ungratefully scolds her, nearly being forced to assault the Emperor's consul for his disrespect before the Emperor intervenes. When Mulan is confronted by the Emperor, Shang is worried that she will be punished by the Emperor. However, when Mulan is instead praised by the Emperor, she is shocked when Shang follows the Emperor in bowing to her in order to regard her as a hero. After being honored by the Emperor, Mulan is approached by Shang who attempts to tell her that he is in love with her, but only compliments on her fighting talents, which Mulan thanks him for before she leaves to go home and reunite with her family.

Meanwhile, Mulan is reunited with Shang when he follows her home after receiving some encouragement from the Emperor to confess his feelings for her. With her father’s approval, Mulan invites Shang to dinner which he happily accepts; thus, allowing the two to confess their feelings and start a romantic relationship.

Fa Zhou

Mulan being comforted by Fa Zhou.

Mulan shared a strong, good relationship with her father, Fa Zhou where she took care of him due to his poor health by reminding him to take three cups of tea in the morning and three at night. Mulan also strove to make her father proud by upholding their family’s honor. However, after Mulan failed to impress the matchmaker, she could not bear to look at her father, feeling she had disappointed him. However, her father cheered her up by comparing her to a late blooming cherry blossom and putting her hair comb in her hair.

When the Emperor's consul, Chi-Fu arrived to announce that the Huns had invaded China and gave out conscription notices to every man, Mulan was horrified to see her father being called up to join the Imperial Army. Mulan tried to stop her father from joining taking his conscription notice and explain to Chi-Fu of her father’s frail health, only for her father to reprimand her, saying she “dishonored” him.

Later, Mulan secretly watched her father practice with his old sword in preparation to go to war, only to see her father fall to the ground in severe pain, making Mulan even more worried for her father. At dinner, Mulan again tried to convince her father to not go to war, saying there were plenty of men willing to fight for China and it was unfair for him having to go fight in order to die for honor. Fa Zhou countered he would die doing the right thing to protect his country and family before angrily yelling at Mulan to learn her place as he learned his, which left Mulan in tears. As Mulan sat outside alone in the rain, she watched her father trying to comfort her saddened mother. Realizing she could not bear the thought of losing her father, Mulan decided to join the army in his place by disguising herself as a man. When Fa Zhou discovered Mulan to have left to join the army, he was deeply saddened and blamed himself for driving Mulan away as he knew Mulan would be killed if she was discovered to be a female.

Ultimately, Mulan managed to return home after winning the war by defeating Shan Yu and the Hun Army. She approached her father who was surprised to see her as she presented him Shan Yu’s sword and the Emperor’s crest as gifts and a way to apologize to him. However, her father tossed the gifts and embraced Mulan, telling her that his “greatest gift and honor” is having her as his daughter. Mulan then reconciled with her father as the two shared a warm, loving embrace.

Fa Li

Mulan and Fa Li.

Mulan shared a strong, good relationship with her mother, Fa Li despite the latter disapproving Mulan of not following traditions and being a proper Chinese woman. When Mulan was assigned to meet the matchmaker, she was scolded by her mother for arriving late before she was helped by the latter in getting dressed. When Mulan’s meeting with the matchmaker went horribly wrong, she was comforted by her mother, who despite being disappointed, was deeply saddened for her daughter when she was told she would never bring honor to her family by becoming a wife. This showed Fa Li cared more about her daughter than old traditions.

After Mulan’s father, Fa Zhou was called to fight for the Imperial Army due to the Huns invading China, both Mulan and her mother were deeply concerned as they knew Fa Zhou would not survive in the war due to his old age and health. When Mulan tried to convince her father to not go to war, Fa Li tried to stop her daughter from arguing, only to watch Mulan run off in tears when her father yelled at her to learn her place.

As Mulan sat outside alone in the rain, she watched her mother attempting to be comforted by her father, only to see her run off crying. Unable to bear seeing her mother upset over losing her husband, Mulan decided to join the army in her father’s place by disguising herself as a man. When Fa Li discovered Mulan’s departure, she begged her husband to go after her, fearing she’ll get killed, only to become saddened when her husband revealed if Mulan were to be discovered to be a female fighting in the army, she would get executed.

However, Mulan was able to return home alive after winning the war by saving all of China from the Hun Army. As Mulan embraced her father, she watched by her mother who expressed how proud she was of Mulan and finally accepted her for the type of woman was.

Grandmother Fa

Mulan shared a good, close relationship with her grandmother who accepted Mulan for the type of individual she was. Her grandmother also wanted Mulan to uphold their family's honor and despite not liking their village's matchmaker, she believed Mulan becoming a bride was the best way for Mulan to bring honor to their family. When Mulan was assigned to meet the matchmaker, she was helped by her grandmother in getting ready where she was gifted an apple, a pendant, jaded beads, and a cricket named Cri-Kee for good luck. However, Mulan's meeting goes horribly wrong due to Cri-Kee escaping from his cage and jumping into the matchmaker's tea. After Mulan was told she would never bring honor to her family by becoming a wife, she was comforted by her grandmother.

When the Emperor's consul, Chi-Fu arrived, Mulan was gestured by her grandmother to go up on the roof to hear what Chi-Fu had to announce as she believed Mulan had the right to know what news the Emperor's consul had to reveal. After hearing the Huns had invaded China and Mulan's father had to go serve in the army, both Mulan and her grandmother were saddened as they knew as they knew Fa Zhou would not survive in the war. When Mulan argued with Fa Zhou telling her to learn her place just like he did, this caused Mulan to run in tears, leaving her grandmother upset at her son yelling at her granddaughter and he is slowly regretting it. When Mulan left to join the army in her father's place, Grandmother Fa was the first to realize Mulan's departure and fearing for Mulan's life, prayed to the family ancestors to protect her.

Eventually, Mulan did manage to survive in the war and saved China from the Huns where she returned home safe and sound. Though her grandmother was happy to see Mulan return home, she was disappointed that she brought home a sword instead of a man until Li Shang arrived looking for Mulan. Mulan's invitation to Shang for dinner was supported by her grandmother who immediately accepted Mulan starting a romantic relationship with Shang.

Friends & Allies

Mushu

Mulan and Mushu.

Mulan first met Mushu after she decided to take her father’s place in the army by disguising herself as a man. When Mushu told Mulan that he was one of her family’s powerful guardians and would help her maintain her cover while serving in the Imperial Army, she was mildly impressed due to the dragon’s small stature. Yet, she did accept Mushu to accompany her to a military camp as she needed guidance on how to pass on as a man. However, Mushu’s advice ended up causing Mulan to be the most hated soldier in the camp after accidentally causing a brawl.

Despite this, Mulan allowed Mushu to help her out in her military training, even though his attempts to help her out caused her to nearly fail until she managed to improve her training. As Mulan and Mulan continued being together, Mushu somewhat took on the role of being a parent to Mulan where he was worried that her cover would be blown if she took a bath, prevented her newfound friends Yao, Ling, and Chien Po from discovering her secret, and ordering Mulan to return to her tent.

When Mulan was called into battle, she allowed Mushu to accompany her. However, when Mushu accidentally gave away the Imperial Army’s position by setting off a cannon, Mulan angrily glared at the dragon for his clumsiness. During the battle with the Huns, Mulan used Mushu’s fire breath to light a cannon in order to cause the avalanche that would wipe out the Hun Army. When they were caught in the avalanche, Mulan and Mushu were able to reunite with each other and after being rescued by some Imperial soldiers, Mulan was praised by Mushu for her strategy to defeat the Huns.

Conversely, in the process of starting the avalanche, Mulan received injuries from the Huns’ leader, Shan Yu, leaving Mushu concerned for her. However, Mulan ended being exposed as a woman where Mushu watched in horror as Captain Li Shang prepared to execute Mulan, only to be relieved when he instead spared her as a way to repay her for saving his life earlier. After Mulan was left behind by the army, she began blaming herself for leaving her home as Mushu attempted to reassure her that she left to save her father’s life. When Mulan revealed that other than to protect her father, she wanted to prove to everyone she was not a worthless, vulnerable woman, but now believed to have failed in proving herself, Mushu attempted to cheer her up until he revealed that he lied to her about being a guardian and wanted to help her so he can regain his guardianship from her ancestors. At this reveal, Mulan was not angry with Mushu as she knew he wanted to prove himself just like she wanted to. They decided to go home together and face punishment where Mulan shared a hug with Mushu who reassured her that things will get better between her and her family.

However, when discovering Shan Yu and several of his men had survived the avalanche, Mulan decided to go warn the Imperial Army of Shan Yu’s survival where Mushu decided to accompany her out of complete loyalty. When arriving at the Imperial City, Mulan had trouble convincing Li Shang or anyone that Shan Yu was alive as Mushu sadly pointed Mulan was not going to convince anyone due to her being a woman. When Shan Yu revealed himself to the public, Mulan and Mushu watched in horror as he and his men captured the Emperor of China and raided the royal palace.

As Mulan worked with Li Shang, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po in rescuing the Emperor, Mushu prevented Shan Yu’s falcon, Hayabusa from alerting the Huns of their presence. After rescuing the Emperor where Mulan was left confronted by Shan Yu, she was aided by Mushu in luring the Hun leader to the roofs of the palace. After Mushu and Cri-Kee blasted a rocket at Shan Yu, Mulan grabbed Mushu and jumped off the roof as Shan Yu got killed in a fireworks explosion.

When Mulan was praised by the Emperor for saving China and defeating the Huns, Mushu was so proud and happy for Mulan as he wept tears of joy. Mulan and Mushu later returned home where Mushu regained his position as a guardian and Mulan thanked him for his help by giving him a kiss.

Mulan first met Cri-Kee when her grandmother gave her the cricket as a gift for good luck before she left to meet the Matchmaker. However, Cri-Kee, desiring freedom, escaped from his cage during Mulan’s meeting with the Matchmaker as Mulan tried to stop him from causing trouble. When Cri-Kee went into the Matchmaker’s cup of tea, Mulan saved him from being consumed by the woman. However, Mulan’s attempt to save Cri-Kee ended up ruining her meeting with the Matchmaker. A deeply saddened Mulan released Cri-Kee from his cage so he could be free, but the cricket decided to stay and watch over Mulan due to feeling guilty for causing Mulan to be branded as failure by the Matchmaker.

When Mulan decided to take her father’s place in joining the Imperial Army, Cri-Kee looked concerned for her. When the Fa Family Ancestors wanted to bring Mulan back home by force, Cri-Kee convinced Mushu to go get her himself. Though Cri-Kee aided Mushu in training Mulan to become a war hero, he did help Mulan with her military training and keep her true gender a secret.

When Mulan was called into battle, she allowed Cri-Kee to accompany her. After Mulan caused an avalanche to defeat Shan Yu and his Hun Army, she and Cri-Kee managed to survive the avalanche together. After Mulan was injured by Shan Yu, leaving her to be outed as a woman, Cri-Kee watched in horror as Captain Li Shang prepared to execute Mulan, only to be relieved when he instead spared her as a way to repay her for saving his life earlier. After Mulan was left behind by the army, she and Cri-Kee kept each other warm before Mulan decided to return home and be punished by her family. However, when discovering Shan Yu and several of his men to have survived the avalanche, Mulan was aided by Cri-Kee in warning the army of the Huns’ survival.

After the Huns invaded the Imperial City and kidnapped the Emperor, Mulan was aided by Cri-Kee in defeating the Huns and rescuing the Emperor. Mulan and Cri-Kee worked together in luring Shan Yu to the roofs of the royal palace where Cri-Kee and Mush blasted a rocket at Shan Yu before Mulan grabbed Cri-Kee and jumped off the roof as Shan Yu got killed in a fireworks explosion.

When Mulan was praised by the Emperor for saving China and defeating the Huns, Cri-Kee was so proud and happy for Mulan as he wept tears of joy. Mulan and Cri-Kee later returned home and continued their lives on the Fa Family home together.

Yao, Ling, and Chien Po

Mulan with Yao, Ling, and Chien Po.

Mulan first met Yao, Ling, and Chien Po when she arrived at a military camp after disguising herself as a man in order to protect her ailing father. However, due to receiving bad teaching habits from Mushu, Mulan ended causing a fight between her and the boys, leading them to destroy the camp. This led to Yao, Ling, and Chien Po getting punished by Captain Li Shang where they formed a huge disliking towards the disguised Mulan.

During training sessions, Mulan was picked on by Yao and Ling, except for Chien Po who was the nicest of his friends, but he did not protect her from his friends’ cruelty. However, Mulan managed to win the respects of Yao, Ling, and Chien Po when she won a challenge to retrieve an arrow at the top of a pole that Li Shang had set up for his recruits. As a result, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po grew more friendly towards Mulan. When Mulan was spotted by the men bathing in a pond, she accepted their friendship, even though she was uncomfortable with their nudity as she hid her gender from them.

Later, when Shang’s troops are called to fight in the war, Mulan became uncomfortable when Yao, Ling, and Chien Po expressed what kind of dream girls they want, but she laughed when Yao joked that Chi-Fu’s dream girl was his mother. When they are drawn into battle after Mushu accidentally gave away their position, Mulan, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po defended each other from the Huns. When Mulan took the army’s last cannon and ran out to the battlefield alone, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po ran out to help her, only to be cut short when they see Mulan had caused an avalanche by firing the cannon into a mountain. As Mulan tried to rescue Shang from the avalanche, Yao shot an arrow, with a rope attached, to save both Mulan and Shang from falling off a cliff. Unfortunately, the rope slips through his fingers, but Mulan was able to grab the arrow and shoot it back into Yao's hands. Yao and Ling, along with several troops attempted to pull Mulan and Shang up but struggled until Chien Po picked up the entire unit and pulled them up.

After being pulled up from the cliff, Mulan was praised by Yao, Ling, and Chien Po for her courageous actions in defeating the Huns, only for the three to become concerned when Mulan had sustained injuries from Shan Yu earlier. When Mulan was discovered to be a woman as she had her wounds treated, leading Chi-Fu to expose her, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po were shocked to see that their comrade was actually a female. Despite this, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po still showed some concern toward Mulan, possibly due to her hearing that she joined the army to protect her father and attempted to stop Shang from executing her, only to be halted by Chi-Fu. After Mulan was spared by Shang, she felt bad for deceiving for her friends while Yao, Ling, and Chien Po felt bad for being ordered to leave Mulan behind.

When Mulan discovered Shan Yu and several of his men to have survived the avalanche, she rushed to the Imperial City and told Yao, Ling, and Chien Po to keep an eye out for the Huns. When Shan Yu revealed himself and captured the Emperor, Mulan recruited her friends in helping her save the Emperor and Yao, Ling, and Chien Po decided to follow her, showing that despite Mulan lying to them earlier, they still regarded her as their friend. Mulan, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po worked then together in defeating the remaining Huns and rescuing the Emperor.

After Mulan defeated Shan Yu, she was protected by her friends from Chi-Fu who arrogantly ignored the fact Mulan saved China. When Mulan was confronted by the Emperor, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po were worried that she would be punished by the Emperor. However, when Mulan was instead praised by the Emperor, she was shocked when Yao, Ling, and Chien Po followed the Emperor in bowing to her in order to regard her as a hero. After being honored by the Emperor, Mulan embraced Yao, Ling, and Chien Po and said good-bye to them before she left to reunite with her family.

Khan

Mulan shared a strong bond with her family’s horse, Khan. She would enjoy going on rides with Khan and he was willing to take Mulan anywhere. When Mulan decided to take her ailing father’s place in the Imperial Army, Khan was frightened of Mulan’s male disguise as he did not recognize her until she calmed him down, allowing him to recognize her.

The next day, before Mulan goes to a military camp, she tried to impress Khan with her voice and personality impressions of being a man, only to look ridiculous, causing Khan to laugh. During her military training, Mulan seems to take Khan most places she goes even when she goes to bathe. When Yao, Ling, and Chien Po got into the pond to bathe, Mulan was helped by Khan in getting out of the water to prevent her secret from being exposed.

When Mulan and her division get sent to war, she and Khan traveled together to fight the Huns. When Mushu accidentally gave away the army’s position, Mulan protected Khan and helped get him to safety before the Huns destroyed the carriage filled with cannons that Khan was carrying. When Mulan triggered an avalanche to defeat the Hun Army, she was rescued by Khan and the two worked together in saving Captain Li Shang from the avalanche.

When Mulan was discovered to be a woman, as she was treated for some injuries, Khan tried to stop Shang from executing Mulan when he was ordered to do so by Chi-Fu only to be restrained by several soldiers. After Shang spared Mulan, leaving her discharged from the army, she was comforted by Khan who wrapped her around a blanket and sat next to her in order to keep her warm from the cold weather. Later, when Mulan discovered Shan Yu and several of his Huns to be alive, she was accompanied by Khan in warning the Imperial City of the Huns’ attack.

After Mulan managed to defeat Shan Yu and save China, Khan bowed to his owner to show how much he respected her heroism and bravery. Then, Mulan and Khan traveled back home where they continued living their life on the farm together.

The Emperor of China

Mulan and the Emperor.

Mulan respected the Emperor as he was the ruler of the kingdom of China. After Mulan was expelled from the Imperial when she was revealed to be a woman, she discovered Shan Yu and most of his Hun army was still alive. Mulan, realizing the Emperor was now in danger, rushed to the royal palace to protect the Emperor and stop the Huns from conquering China.

When Shan Yu and the Huns captured the Emperor, Mulan developed a plan to rescue the Emperor with the help of her allies, Li Shang, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po. When barging into a room of the palace where the Emperor was being held, Mulan urged Chien Po to get the Emperor to safety and prevented Shan Yu from reaching the Emperor.

After Shan Yu’s death, Mulan was approached by the Emperor and bowed to him as he began listing her various crimes. Mulan feared the Emperor would punish her, but when he gratefully noted that she saved him and all of China, Mulan was surprised to be thanked by the Emperor, especially when he bowed to her in respect. When the Emperor attempted to grant her a position in his council and later Chi-Fu’s job, Mulan politely declined the Emperor’s propositions as she wanted to return home to her family. The Emperor respected Mulan’s decision and gave her his crest and Shan Yu’s sword in honor of saving China. Mulan, feeling glad to accomplish such an honor, gave the Emperor a hug to thank him before she returned home to her family.

When Little Brother was done, Mulan would reward by giving him a bone as a treat.

When Mulan returned home after saving China from the Huns, she was happily reunited with Little Brother and continued her life with her dog on their farm.

Enemies

Shan Yu

Mulan-disneyscreencaps.com-8745
Mulan facing Shan Yu.

After Shan Yu and his Hun army invaded China, Mulan disguised herself as a man and joined the Imperial Army in order to protect her frail father. Mulan learned of Shan Yu as she trained with some recruits in preparation for battle and realized how ruthless he was when she and the army came across a ransacked village where there were no survivors.

Mulan finally met Shan Yu when being ambushed by the Huns in the mountains after Mushu accidentally gave away the Imperial Army’s position. Upon seeing Shan Yu and his entire armed forces, Mulan realized she and her comrades could not defeat Shan Yu and the Huns, due to being in smaller numbers. With quick thinking, Mulan decided to cause an avalanche in order to defeat Shan Yu and his armada. When Mulan was able to fire a cannon into a mountain, thus causing an avalanche, Shan Yu angrily attacked and injured Mulan with his sword for destroying his chance of victory before he got engulfed by the avalanche. The injures Mulan received from Shan Yu left her to be exposed as a woman and be discharged from the Imperial Army.

However, before Mulan could return home to face dishonor, she discovered Shan Yu and several of his men to have survived the avalanche. Refusing to let Shan Yu and his men conquer China, Mulan decided to go to the Imperial City and warn the people of Shan Yu’s survival and planned attack, in the hopes of stopping the evil Hun chieftain from taking over her country.

When Shan Yu and his men attacked the palace and kidnapped the Emperor, Mulan teamed up with her comrades, Li Shang, Yao, Ling, and Chien Po in rescuing the Emperor from Shan Yu. After successfully managing to rescue the Emperor, Mulan was horrified to see Shan Yu beat Shang up and stopped him from reaching the Emperor by cutting the rope Yao, Ling, and Chien Po used to get the Emperor to safety.

When Shan Yu attempted to strike Shang in anger for his plans being ruined, Mulan stopped him from killing Shang and revealed that she was the one who caused the avalanche to wipe out his Hun Army; thus, preventing him from conquering China. This revelation angered Shan Yu where he began pursuing Mulan throughout the palace, attempting to kill her in a blind rage. As Mulan ran from Shan Yu, she came up with a plan to kill to him, as she knew Shan Yu was too dangerous to be left alive. When Mulan climbed up to the roof of the palace, she was eventually cornered by Shan Yu who taunted her for running out ideas. However, Mulan was able to disarm him using her paper fan as Mushu prepared to blast a rocket at him. Mulan then proceeded to kick Shan Yu in the face when he tried to attack her before using his sword to pin him to the roof. Once Mulan got out of the way, leaving Shan Yu to be slammed into the rocket, Mulan quickly ran and jumped off the roof as Shan Yu crashed into a tower full of fireworks, killing him in an explosion. After Shan Yu’s demise, Mulan’s actions saved China from Shan Yu and the Huns’ oppression where she was recognized and honored as a hero by the Emperor and all of the people in China.

Chi-Fu

Mulan-disneyscreencaps.com-7089
Mulan and Chi-Fu.

Mulan first meet Chi-Fu when he arrived in her village to announce the Huns’ invasion and to enlist recruits into the Imperial Army. When Mulan’s father had to be enlisted into the army, Mulan tried to explain to Chi-Fu of her father’s earlier war service, only for him to ignore her and ordered her father, Fa Zhou, to teach Mulan to be silent in the presence of men, revealing his sexism.

Mulan would meet Chi-Fu again when she disguised herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army. When Mulan identified herself as “Ping,” son of Fa Zhou, Chi-Fu grew suspicious, but Mulan managed to diminish Chi-Fu’s suspicions by failing to do a spit, causing Chi-Fu to call her a “lunatic.” As Mulan trained with in the army, she began to dislike Chi-Fu for his pompous, sexist attitude and not believing in Li Shang’s capability to be a leader and her friends’ skills to be soldiers.

When Mulan managed to defeat the Hun Army by causing an avalanche, leaving her injured, this left her to be discovered as a woman, prompting Chi-Fu to drag her out of the medical tent and reveal her identity to the rest of the army before throwing her into the snow, calling Mulan a “treacherous snake.” Though Mulan defeated the Hun Army and explained her reasons in joining the army to save her father, Chi-Fu was the only one uncaring towards her, saying her actions brought high treason and claimed “ultimate dishonor” onto her. Chi-Fu then coldly ordered Shang to execute Mulan as it was forbidden for women to join the army, but Shang refused to do so, due to Mulan saving his life, much to Chi-Fu’s disbelief.

Later, after Mulan managed to defeat the Huns’ leader, Shan Yu and rescue the Emperor in the Imperial City, Chi-Fu, instead of being grateful to Mulan for saving China, was angered over his official's hat being burned by fireworks, citing it as a deliberate attempt on his life. Chi-Fu went to confront Mulan, who was being shielded by her friends as Chi-Fu called her a “creature” and proclaimed she was not worth protecting. When Shang defended Mulan, noting her heroism, Chi-Fu dismissed the thought by arrogantly stating his belief that as a woman, Mulan would never be worth anything, further showing his disdain for her. When the Emperor began to list the faults Mulan had committed, Chi-Fu showed a grin as he believed Mulan was going to be punished, but grew shocked when the Emperor instead honors Mulan by bowing to her, leading Chi-Fu to follow the Emperor’s example and awkwardly bow to her. When the Emperor offered Mulan a council position, Chi-Fu attempted to downplay the offer, citing that there are no open council positions, still showing his disdain for Mulan. As a result, the Emperor offers Mulan Chi-Fu's own council position, causing the latter to faint, but Mulan politely declined the offer of taking Chi-Fu’s council position. Although Mulan declined being a member of the Imperial council, Chi-Fu still lost his job as a council due to his crimes, sexism and cruelty towards Mulan.

The Matchmaker

Mulan-disneyscreencaps.com-1051
Mulan and the Matchmaker.

To bring honor to her family, Mulan had to meet her village’s matchmaker to become a suitable wife. Though Mulan did not want to be in an arranged marriage, she decided to meet the matchmaker because she wanted to bring honor to her family in order to make them proud of her.

When Mulan went to go see the Matchmaker, she was immediately scolded by the woman for speaking without permission when Mulan was the first to be called upon by the Matchmaker. During Mulan’s meeting with the Matchmaker, she was put through a series of evaluation where the Matchmaker deemed her to be too “skinny” to bear sons. When Mulan was told to recite the “Final Admonition,” she was barely caught by the Matchmaker for cheating as Mulan had written notes on her arm so she would correctly do the recitation and bring honor to her family.

As Mulan served tea to the Matchmaker, she noticed Cri-Kee who had escaped from his cage, was in the Matchmaker’s teacup. She tried to warn the Matchmaker about the cricket, only to be silenced by the woman. Mulan then attempted to retrieve the cup from the Matchmaker in order to stop her from consuming Cri-Kee, only to accidentally spill tea all over her. When the Matchmaker’s dress caught on fire, Mulan attempted to put out the fire with her fan until she finally put the fire out by splashing the Matchmaker with tea, ruining the latter’s makeup in the process. Mulan was then angrily berated by the Matchmaker who noted that while she looked a bride, she would never bring her family honor through becoming a servile wife. Mulan was deeply hurt by the Matchmaker’s words where she began doubting herself on bringing honor to her family while remaining true to herself. However, Mulan managed prove the Matchmaker was wrong about her as she had managed to save the Emperor and all of China from Shan Yu and his Hun Army, thus bringing honor to her family.
