Mickey's Rival Returns

Mickey's Rival Returns

Mickey's Rival Returns is a Mickey Mouse cartoon originally aired as part of an episode of Mickey Mouse Works. It is notable for marking the return of Mortimer Mouse (in his traditional role as Mickey's rival) to animation. It was later featured in the House of Mouse episode "Everybody Loves Mickey".

Synopsis

Mickey tries for a relaxing day at the beach and maybe a date with Minnie afterwards, but his day is ruined by the return of the obnoxious Mortimer Mouse, an old rival for Minnie's affection.

Plot

First when Mickey tries to relax in his beach chair, Mickey reaches in his cooler for a soda can and Mortimer presses his remote for a soda can from his vending machine, then when Mickey turns on his radio, Mortimer blasts Mickey away with his huge stereo system. Mickey fights his way back and closes up the stereo. Mortimer says, "Hey, my music! You lookin' for a punch in the mouth?" and Mickey says "Oh, someone's gonna get a punch, all right!". They both start to fight, but stop abruptly in midair when they see Minnie walk by.

Mickey and Mortimer drop to the sand and try to stop each other from asking Minnie out for a swim or a lemonade, but Minnie declines both their offers as she wants to get some sun before the luau. Both Mickey and Mortimer want to ask her out, but Mortimer suggest they settle their argument with a game of beach volleyball. Mickey disliked the idea of "treating her like a trophy", but when Mortimer tells him he'd always be a "little mousey", Mickey eventually gives in.

As Mickey was about to serve the ball, Mortimer stops him as he needed to do some warmups. When Mortimer was ready, Mickey knocks him out with the ball and taunts that he was just getting warmed up. As the game progressed, Mortimer cheats at the game in bizarre ways, from puncturing one volleyball with a pin and making Mickey miss and the deflating volleyball sending Mickey flying, even lounging in his lounge chair, using his volleyball cannon to fire volleyballs at Mickey. One last shot from the cannon sends one volleyball flying around the world and back to Mortimer, which he doesn't notice while laughing and taunting at Mickey, but the volleyball hits Mortimer in the back and knocks him down, giving Mickey a chance to hit the ball and scoring Mickey the final point and the win.

Mickey asks Minnie to be her date at the luau and she gladly accepts up until Mortimer shows up and congratulates him for winning his "trophy". Minnie questions this upon hearing Mortimer's congrats to Mickey. Mickey tries to explain what happened, but Mortimer kicks him away, causing Mickey to land upside down in his cooler. Mortimer tells Minnie he was going to take her to the luau, but makes up a lie that Mickey said that he'd have to win her, which angers Minnie, calling Mickey a chauvinist pig and goes with Mortimer for the date when Mickey says the Donald's quote "Ah Phooey".

In the evening, Minnie and Mortimer are both on a date at the luau while Mickey feels upset, knees on the sand, heartbroken. Mortimer wants to kiss Minnie for a little “sugar” but Minnie gets mad because she doesn't want to mess up the evening. Mickey starts to get angry while hearing Mortimer harassing Minnie for a kiss when Minnie angrily hits Mortimer on the head with a tiki torch. Mickey comes to Mortimer and wraps a flower necklace around his waist, then he jumps on a wooden plank which catapults Mortimer away when he screams for a loud word "Mickeeeyy!" and he ended up serving in a plate. Mickey apologizes to Minnie and she accepts his apology.

Minnie asks Mickey to be her date at the luau and he gladly accepts again by happily going on a walk when he said that he was a pig and Minnie tells him that Mickey was not a pig. After Mortimer was thrown down by serving a dish with an apple on his mouth, Mickey and Minnie enjoy their perfect dining as he said the Mortimer's quote "Ha-Cha-Cha” to mock him.
