Abstract

The first chapter introduces the general framework based on data coherence for modeling and rendering the appearance of materials from images. It includes a review of background knowledge helpful for understanding the content of this book. The review covers basic principles on light interaction with materials, a taxonomy of reflectance functions, and the general pipeline for appearance modeling and rendering. In presenting the general framework, the coherence in appearance data and how it can be used to simplify various aspects of the appearance modeling process are described. The chapter closes with an overview of the three parts of the book, namely acquisition and modeling of opaque surfaces, modeling and rendering of subsurface light transport, and material fabrication.
