"Lionidas" is a pun on 5th-century BCE Spartan warrior-king Leonidas I. According to ancient legend, Leonidas fought and died in an heroic last stand against Persian emperor Xerxes' troops in the Battle of Thermopylae, heading a battalion of 300 unified Greek soldiers.
