Between 1883and 1892 he was at his best, and was the hero ofmany a sensational score. Once—against Oxfordin 1888—he compiled the magnificent total of338, and on three occasions within the periodmentioned exceeded 200 in first-class cricket. Alist of his centuries would fill half a page of thisvolume. For many years he was the ^ idol atthe Oval, and no wonder, for his hitting was freeand his scoring always rapid.
