File:Henderson and the donkey.jpg

Original file (500 × 620 pixels, file size: 75 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Lt. Richard Alexander "Dick" Henderson, New Zealand Medical Corps, carrying a wounded soldier on a donkey during the Battle of Gallipoli.

For many years it was thought that this was a photo of Australian stretcher bearer John Simpson Kirkpatrick and it was widely circulated as such. It was used by New Zealand artist Horace Moore-Jones as the basis of a 1917 painting, The man with the donkey (AWM ART92147), which was dedicated "to the memory of our hero comrade 'Murphy' (Simpson) killed May 1915".

Photograph by Sgt. James G. Jackson (New Zealand) on 12 May 1915.
Australian War Memorial catalogue number P03136.001
