Description
English: Laborare est Orare a painting by John Rogers Herbert.

Commentaries: Tate, Terry Prest.

Both the above commentaries claim that the building shown at top left is Mount St Bernard Abbey. However the church of that abbey has no spire - see these images.

  • The Tate Gallery's catalogue entry for this painting explains that Herbert based the appearance of the church on Pugin's original designs, i.e as it was intended for the completed church to look. Herbert and Pugin were close personal friends The abbey's guest book for 1861 records the visit of J.R Herbert - "artist from London" - in July of that year. The painting was completed in 1862.
