Summary

Description
English: Kempten was both a tiny Free Imperial City and an Imperial Abbey, whose territory extended well beyond the city limits. Since both entities enjoyed imperial immediacy (Reichsunmittelbarkeit), they were de facto sovereign states, independent of each other and other German states. City and abbey, having their seat in the same town, coexisted uneasily for centuries, the more so that the Free City had been officially Protestant since 1527. Cropped from a map of the Circle of Swabia published by R. Wilkinson in 1802.
